Baby Blues
It was a busy day at the Temple of Love. It was always like that around the
time of the Fertility Festival. The scent of passion flower incense wafted
through the air as a gentle breeze rocked the red paper lanterns hanging
all around the temple. Couples of all ages who desired to conceive made their
pilgrimage to the special alter dedicated to Tinia, life mate to Vasah, and
goddess of fertility. At dusk a corporate prayer would be lead by Holy Master
Volshae. After that, couples were permitted to pray their own special, personal
prayers to Tinia. Volshae was surprised to see Lady Lsa and Master Makel
at the Temple.
{Master and Lady Meglouse. Excuse my asking, but what are you doing here?}
{We’re here on behalf of our son, Mikel. He asked that we say a special prayer
for him and his mate at the Festival this year since they couldn’t attend,}
Makel replied. Volshae seemed relieved to hear that. Lsa and Makel already
had five children, four of them quadruplets.
{Well, Vasah willing, I hope their prayers are answered.}
Over a hundred light years away in Limbo, Mikel had set up his own personal
alter to Tinia in his quarters on Hawk Haven.
{Tinia, Holy Mother of All, please grant my hearts desire. Bless me and my
entawan with another baby girl,} he prayed. Unfortunately, his mate had no
idea what he had set in motion.
Meanwhile, Cami stood beside her own private altar, dedicated to both Tinia
and Thal'Rahi, her mate's patron god. Hopefully, this will be able to guarantee
an answer to her prayers. That is, if Tinia didn't mind sharing an altar
with a foreign god, just this once.
{Tinia, Holy Mother of All, please grant my heart's desire. Bless me and
my entawan with both a boy and a girl. Praise be to Thal'Rahi, Warrior of
the Gods, Protector of my soul mate's people, Guardian of the Spirit Realm.
I pray to he of the Spiritual Warriors to grant me and my soul mate a blessed
pair so that we may achieve balance within our blood.} she prayed. With that
in mind, she set off for a special destination; it was their third anniversary
and her mate promised her something very special. What that was, she has
yet to find out.
Camiel had already de-armored and changed into her meditation garments. She
packed up her mate’s gift, a clear crystal with a message of love embedded
within, and teleported down the Bedlama. When she entered the cave behind
Weeping Falls she could already smell the scent of star daisy incense. When
the damp corridor opened up to a lager area of the cave, she saw her love
setting up the therma stones.
“Happy Anniversary, Sh’Ekrah!” she greeted cheerfully.
“Camiel, you’re here! And just in time!” The Brigadier walked over to her
and held her in a loving embrace. “Camiel, my love, these three years have
been the most wonderful years of my life. And I’m looking forward to spending
many more with you.”
"I feel the same way about you, kesobo. I brought you a gift.” She
handed him the crystal.
“Why, alixia, it’s beautiful!” He looked at the crystal closely to
read the message, which he immediately recognized. “It’s the poem you wrote
me for our first anniversary!”
“Now it’s preserved forever in this crystal.”
“I will cherish it always.”
"Okay, so...where's my gift?"
"I was supposed to get you something?"
"Sh'Ekrah!"
"I'm joking, Cami. Here." Sh'Ekrah handed his love a small box. When Cami
opened it, she saw a pair of diamond stud earrings.
"Oh, Sh'Ekrah...they're beautiful!"
"Only the best for my lady."
"You're the best I'll ever want."
"Well, what are you waiting for? Try them on!" Cami did so. "You look beautiful,
Milady. As usual."
"You flatter me."
"Cami, since we're here, all alone, I think perhaps it's time we give ourselves
a mutual gift."
"Oh, how so?"
"It's spring, isn't it? You said that your people celebrate a Fertility Festival
at this time of year, correct?"
"You mean..."
"I want a family of our own."
"Oh, you are so the best!!" Cami couldn't help but squeal in delight as her
mate laid her down on the nearby blanket and covered the both of them up
with a spare as he sexually dominated her. "What are those oils?" she asked,
pointing to the bowls of different oils. "I recognize the passion flower
and the aloe, but what are the others?"
"One is star daisy leaves, the other star daisy stems." he said. "An old
custom states that the oil from the stems is rubbed on the female's abdomen
to ensure growth. The oil from the leaves are rubbed on the breasts to ensure
strength of both the mother and her child."
"Oooh! Three different oils at once! This should be interesting!"
The amorous couple didn’t hesitate to put all of the oils to good use. After
Sh’Ekrah used to special oils on Camiel’s belly and breasts, his mate also
gave him a special massage. Not surprisingly, it worked like a charm.
Meanwhile, Lady Detia had come home from her job at the Governor’s office.
She was a bit tired, and looked forward to relaxing in the now empty nest
of a home. All of her children had moved out and had their own homes. Her
oldest had been married for several years, and there was talk of her second
oldest planning to propose to his long time girlfriend. Her youngest was
working and had his own place. Detia slowly sat down on the couch to enjoy
the peace and quiet. By the time she got comfortable, her mate had come out
of the kitchen.
{Hey, Hunky Man! You’re home early!}
{Not really. I got off on time. You’re late.}
{Whatever,} Detia chuckled. {I’m just glad to be home again. My feet are
killing me!}
{Would you like me to give you a massage?}
{Yes, please!}
Detia truly did need that massage, however in this couple’s case, massages
tend to lead to other things. As Mikel kneaded his fingers into the soles
of her feet she felt her muscles relax. She also felt her body responding
in other ways, which was only natural since the soles of her feet were one
of her erogenous zones. By this time, the massage was feeling so good, she
closed her eyes and leaned her head back on the couch. Her eyes flew back
open when she felt Mikel begin to kiss her feet and suck her toes.
{Baby, what are you doing?}
As if in answer to her question, Mikel kissed his way up her legs.
They were getting very amorous as the night wore on. As they started to make
love, Detia was grateful she had started to take the birth control pills.
What she didn't know, however, was that Mikel had switched the pills on her.
What she's been taking for the past few months were actually sugar pills.
He wanted a girl and he wanted one bad.
{I just hope Dee doesn't notice the fake pills.} he thought as they continued
their session. As they continued, Detia started to feel that she forgot something.
Dismissing the thought, she concentrated on her mate and his affections.
About a month after both couples celebrated the Fertility Festival in their
own way, neither knew that their prayers would be answered so soon. Sundance
had scheduled a routine physical with Moeba in the infirmary. She wasn’t
showing any physical sign of pregnancy, but it was still too early for that.
The only way to know for sure this early was a test. After the regular part
of the physical, Sundance asked the Omnimorph for a pregnancy test. Before
taking the test, Moeba asked the routine questions (the date of her last
period, if she’s been sexually active within the past month, and such) then
asked for a sample from the patient. Within minutes, Camiel had the answer
to her question.
"Oh Vasah! We did it!"
"Congratulations." Moeba said, receiving a hug from Cami. "Should I inform
the Commander about this?"
"No thanks, Moeba. I'll tell him myself." After that was done, all that was
left was to tell her mate the wonderful news, but it would have to wait until
after work. After going through what seemed to be forever, Cami finally got
home. Shortly after, her mate burst through the door, she noticed he was
stressed. "Hard day, love?" she asked.
"Pretty much." he explained. "Usual training sessions with new recruits,
the Mob up to no good and the such. Your day?"
"Had a routine physical and learned I was pregnant." Her love just simply
stared at her.
"What?"
"I'm pregnant, kesobo." Sh'Ekrah just simply lifted Cami up in the
air and kissed her.
"That's the best news I've heard all day!" he said as he embraced her.
That very evening the Brightlights called their parents and told them the
wonderful news. Needless to say, everyone was very excited. This would be
the first grandchild on both sides. Sundance was immediately put on administrative
duties, which was the policy in the case of a SilverHawk pregnancy.
About a month after their announcement, Detia woke up to go to work one day.
She was feeling kind of groggy and had a slight headache, but she didn’t
see any reason for concern and went on to work. As the day progressed, her
headache worsened. She also began to feel very nauseous. She barely made
it to the ladies room during her lunch break. After the incident at lunch
Detia slowly began to realize what was going on. Everything in the office
came to a stand still when her coworkers heard a sound that was a combination
of a scream and a growl. They all turned to see Detia at her desk yelling
to her phone.
{MIKEL MEGLOUSE, I’M GOING TO KILL YOU!}
No one understood Mua, but from the way she was acting, they pretty much
figured out what was being said.
On Hawk Haven, the Copper Kidd’s fellow Hawks were giving him strange looks
as they overheard him being screamed on by a very upset Detia. None of the
others, except Sundance and Chatterbox, understood what was being said until
Detia spoke the last sentence in English.
"I got two words for ya, baby...SNIP SNIP!"
Hearing that, there others responded according to their gender. The females
started to snicker and the males looked a bit uncomfortable.
“Somebody’s in big trouble,” Bluegrass mumbled under his breath. When Mikel
shot him a look, everyone else bust out laughing.
Detia angrily hung up the phone, then got her birth control pills out of
her purse. "A lot of good you did!" she shouted as she threw the container
on the floor. Upon impact, the pills burst out and some of them even became
open. Examining the pills' contents more closely, Detia's anger turned into
full-blown rage.
{THAT LITTLE NAZRIC! WHEN I GET THROUGH WITH HIM, HE'S GONNA WISH HE NEVER
DID THIS!!} Unfortunately for Mikel, Detia planned to make him go through
a new kind of exile...right to the couch!
After the early pregnancy symptoms passed, Detia was feeling better and in
a better mood. Her mate decided it was safe to come home for good. He had
been hiding out in his quarters on Hawk Haven every chance he got. Both the
Brightlights and the Meglouses thought it was going to be an interesting
nine moths since both mother and daughter were expecting at the same time.
Detia and Camiel spent a lot of time together sharing in the experience.
It was Camiel’s first pregnancy and through watching her mother she learned
a lot about what to expect. In the third month, Camiel began to experience
something she never expected. She started craving fire berries. Before she
was pregnant, she couldn’t stand them, but now she can’t get enough of them.
Sh’Ekrah wasn’t aware of this new craving until his private stash went missing.
Several months later it was sonogram time. Before Detia and Mikel even got
to the doctor’s office she knew what she was hoping to hear.
{This baby better be a girl, Mik. Cuz after this one…it’s vasectomy time!}
Her mate cringed at the sound of that as they pulled into the parking lot.
During the visit they couple found out that they were expecting a healthy
baby girl. Both parents were relived for their own reasons. {Don’t get too
comfortable, baby. You’re still getting a vasectomy!}
{Can’t you get your tubes tied?}
{No! It’s your turn to go through something!}
By Vasah, what have I gotten myself into?, he thought as they headed home.
Mikel wasn't the only one who questioned his current situation. Camiel and
her mate came along for her own sonogram. Sh'Ekrah had insisted on coming
to see his future children, as the bulk on Camiel's womb clearly indicated.
Chatts had teased that the couple had gotten lucky and got two of each. When
they started the sonogram, neither of them were prepared for the results.
"Oh gods!" they both shouted when they saw the results. Even the doctors
were perplexed.
"Well," a doctor said. "These are the healthiest Hash'a'Glith-Mimian-human
tribrid octuplets I've ever seen."
Cami gave her mate an evil stare. "I'm going to have to give birth to EIGHT
CHILDREN?!" she cried. "What did you do to me?!"
Sh'Ekrah, on the other hand, looked very calm about all of this. "Can you
tell the sexes?" he asked the doctor.
"It's very crowded in the womb," the doctor explained. "So far, it's hard
to tell, but I think there's a girl in there somewhere."
"I see...nothing to worry about. Camiel is healthy and the octuplets are
in excellent condition." Then he fainted.
Mikel was busy doting over his entawan when they got a call. When Mik answered
it, he heard the shaky voice of his daughter.
{Pahda, are you sitting down?}
{Uh, yeah.}
{Good. We saw the sonogram today.}
{Oh, great! So what are you two having?}
{Octuplets.}
{Excuse me, did you say OCTUPLETS?}
{Yes, Pahda...}
Mikel gently set the phone on his thigh and turned to Detia with an expression
of total shock on his face.
{What's wrong, baby? She's not having quads, is she?} Mikel shook his head
'no.' {Then what is it?}
{Octuplets...}
{What?! Give me that phone!} Detia grabbed the phone from her mate. {Cami,
where is that man of yours?!}
{He...he fainted.}
{Well, when he wakes up, let me scream on him for making my child a baby
factory working overtime!}
{I don't think you'll be able to do that, Mahda.}
{And why not?}
{Because he's gonna go deaf after I'm through with him!}
{Oh, ok, just save some for me, will ya?}
{Not a problem. Hold on, he's waking up.} Cami began looking at her mate
as he got up and faced her.
"Cami, what happened?" he asked.
"You fainted, love." Cami replied. "After learning what we're having."
"I think I had a dream about that. I dreamt we were having...that wasn't
a dream, wasn't it?"
"Nope. Eight children, baking in the oven, and someone is dead meat."
"Cami.. alixia, calm down..."
"CALM DOWN?! YOU'RE NOT THE ONE CARRYING EIGHT CHILDREN IN HERE!!!"
"Okay, okay...look, multiple births is common in my species..."
"OH, SO I SHOULD CONSIDER THIS AS NORMAL?!"
"I admit, that's rare, even in Hash'a'Glith cases, but really, dear..."
"DON'T YOU DEAR ME, BUSTER!! YOU ARE GOING TO BE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE WHEN
WE GET HOME!"
"I get the feeling I already am."
The doctor prescribed bed rest for the rest of Camiel’s pregnancy. She also
had to come in for a check-up at least twice a month. Detia contacted Master
Quito’s pitawan, Lady Dani, to come to Bedlama to be Cami’s personal nurse.
Nothing like this had ever happened in their family before. Lsa having quads
was shocking enough, but there was no fertility statue involved in this situation.
“Sh’Ekrah, you think we might have used too many star daisy stems?”
“I have no idea, love.”
Somehow news of Camiel Brightlight’s pregnancy started to pop up in the news
feeds. Soon just about everyone from Limbo to Tampala knew about the bizarre
situation. The news even made its way to Brim*Star. Mon*Star didn’t take
much interest in the news, as well as the rest of the Mob, except for one
person. Astrala.
"That overgrown calamari's married and expecting kids?" Ala thought to herself.
"This is way too easy!" Astrala quickly made her way towards the lab, where
her best friend, Glycerin, was cooking up newer drugs for the ring.
" Gutentag, mein freund," Glycerin greeted. " Was ist oben?"
What’s up?
"I need something, Rin. Something big."
"Oh...you know I'm a good supplier, Ala. Was do you need?"
"Your strongest poison, and lots of it."
"Poison? Is this for another of your missions?"
"You could say that."
"Ah...I had some lethal flora from the Mimian homeworld the MATI had donated
to me, but I've yet to see vat they can do. You see, I've been experimenting
vith the plants alongside some local toxins and researching the mixtures."
"Interesting. What's there so far?"
"This little leaf, mein freund." Glycerin pointed to a bunch of fern-like
plants in a simple plot of soil. Astrala looked at it curiously. "The Mimians
call it Opu barani (deadly lace). The poison resides in the leaves and takes
effect via ingestion or injection."
"What are its capabilities?"
"It starts vith extreme muscle pain, then paralysis until the entire body
shuts down."
"Perfect! How long before it runs its course."
"An hour tops in an adult. Depends on size, ya know. Goes quicker if you
inject it."
"How long before you're done experimenting and letting it into our armory?"
"Not long...Ala, vas are you up to?"
"Nothing, old friend. Just making sure everything is going okay."
"This isn't about those octuplets ve heard about, is it?"
"Why would you think that?"
"Ala, I know you. Ever since ve first got sent to the Penal Planet, you've
been hooked in finding a vay to extract vengeance on that brute squid."
"And why the hell not?! You know what he did to me!"
"If you're planning to do vas I think you're planning to do, then you have
a death vish, Frauline!"
"And I should care because...?"
"Because succeed or fail, Brightlight vill hunt you down to the ends of the
universe! You've seen how protective he is of that child bride of his! Imagine
his fury if you try this vhen she's expecting!"
"I was expecting, too, when I tried to assassinate that blasted Governor
before he could become official, and what happens? Brightlight chucks an
electro mace into my abdomen, causing me to lose both my baby and my entire
reproductive system! It's only fair that he experiences the same thing."
"Ala, I'm varning you. Don't do this; it's crazy."
"Like good guys are focused on revenge. Yeah, right."
"Tell that to Dragor."
"He deserved what came to him. Hey, he may have been a good partner, but
I was never into the rape business."
"At least think about this before you try something. I don't vant you to
get hurt."
"Okay, Rin. I'll ponder this, for now." With that, Ala exited the lab.
" Warum erhalte ich das Gefühl, das sie nicht meine Vorsicht beachtet?"
Why do I get the feeling that she’s not going to listen to me?
When the mothers-to-be were in their sixth month, family and friends threw
a baby shower for both of them at the Brightlights’ home. Just about everyone
who could make it was there, including Sh’Ekrah’s parents, Detia’s grandparents,
and Camiel’s two brothers. Valentino even brought his girlfriend, Keisha.
The focus was mostly on Camiel since this was her first pregnancy. Her mother,
Detia, didn’t mind. She still had most of Mikel Pita’s baby things. Camiel
needed much more stuff than her because of the number of babies she was carrying.
Although the focus of the shower was mostly on the expectant mothers, someone
there had special plans. Later that evening, Valentino and Keisha managed
to find a private place to talk. They rarely got a chance to see each other
face to face so time alone was a precious thing to them.
[So, Tino, you must be excited for your sister!]
[Excited and worried. I mean, she’s carrying eight babies! Even if they all
survive, they could end up having serious health problems.]
[Well, we’ll just have to hope an pray that they will all be ok.]
[Keisha, how many kids would you want to have?]
[Certainly not eight, and definitely not all at once!] Keisha and Tino began
to laugh. [Seriously, maybe two or three. Their sexes don’t matter to me.]
[Really?]
[Well, M'Tah's hoping for granddaughters, but it doesn't matter to me.]
[Even if you never give her one?]
[Hey, there's always Lyore.]
[Point taken.]
[Tino, I know we're supposed to give presents to the expectant mothers, but
I got something for you.] Keisha handed Tino a velvet box. Tino looked over
it curiously. [Well, open it!]
[Okay, okay!] When Tino opened the box, his eyes bulged over the white speckled
promise stone. [Keish, this is...]
[I know. So, is the answer yes or no?]
[I'm still getting use to the Mykari custom of females proposing...]
[Is that so? Well, buster, let me tell you, there have been occasions of
humans practing this as well.]
[Really?]
[I checked myself. So, are you gonna marry me or what?]
[I was gonna ask you the same thing! This is defintely a yes!]
[Good.]
[So...whose folks do we tell first, yours or mine?]
[Yours. They're closer and I don't need a lecture on going too fast from
M'Tah. We've been dating forever; the only reason we didn't settle down sooner
was because I was a minor.]
[Oh yea. What's your brother gonna say about all of this?]
[No idea. But if he so much as thinks about making a big deal, we're eloping!]
[Are you sure?]
[100% postitive!]
The newly engaged couple returned to the living room hand in hand. Tino grinned
ear to ear as Keisha made the announcement. His Mimian relatives were not
expecting him to be wearing the promise stone.
[Tino?] Detia signed to her son, [Keisha proposed to you?]
“Well, we kind of proposed to each other, but I went first,” Keisha replied
with a smile. Everyone was happy for the couple, and Keisha was already making
plans to stop by Hawk Haven to give her older brother, Lyore, the news.
At Hawk Haven, Lyore had been working in his office when he was told he had
a visitor. From the looks of Kyle, who had given the announcement and the
heavy rocks all over his armor, Lyore figured out who it was. "Kyle, how
many times do I have to tell you not to mess with my sister?" Lyore asked
him as he greeted Keisha. Kyle mumbled something about Mykari females being
intergalatic bitches, which got him a tremor from Keisha. After that, he
ran.
|How do you work with that jaba yungar?!| she asked her brother.
|With great difficulty, little sis.| he replied. |So, what brings you here?|
|I have something to tell you. You know that Tino and I have been dating,
right?|
|Yea. Oh, you just came from the baby shower? How was it?|
|Great! Anyways, Tino and I were talking, and I popped the question!|
|You're engaged?! Congratulations!|
|Don't congratulate me yet, Lyore. I still have to tell M'Tah and P'Tah!|
|They'll be happy, I know it. I don't see why they wouldn't be, Va'Lenn.|
|What if they think we're going too fast?|
|Too fast? M'Tah's been complaining I go too slow!|
|There's still telling the rest of the family anyways; Uncle Varyn, GuM'Tah
(you know how she gets)--|
|Calm down, Va'Lenn. By the Goddess, you're acting like the Apocalypse is
here!|
|I'm just so happy and excited and all that stuff!|
|Don't worry so much. Why don't you call M'Tah and P'Tah up and I'll stay
with you while you tell them?|
|Well...okay. Oh, and, Lyore,|
|You're welcome. And no, you can't turn Kyle into a statue! I know you hate
him--so does M'Tah--but he's still a co-worker.|
|Damn.|
The next couple months were very interesting for both the Meglouses and the
Brightlights. In spite of the stresses on her body, Camiel was doing very
well, as long as she followed the doctor’s orders closely. Unfortunately,
she was bored. Whenever she had the strength, she would ask Lady Dani to
help her to go outside so she could sit and enjoy the fresh air. As far sa
Camiel knew, her home was a safe haven from danger. She and her mate had
taken extra security precautions in order to protect them from intruders.
However, danger was closer than either of them imagined. They were going
to receive a warning from an unexpected source.
Meanwhile, on Brim Star, Astrala paid another visit to Glycerin's lab. To
her delight, the assassin found her friend holding a small vial. "It's ready?"
Ala eagerly asked.
" Ja, mein fruend." Glycerin replied. "One small vial of custom poison."
"Custom?"
"Opu Barani und keira root."
"You diluted the poison with a narcotic?!"
"Hold it, Ala! Keira root's a Mykari narcotic, ja, but it's fatal to humans."
"And that little Hawk's part human. But even so, it takes longer for keira
root to run its course, right?"
"Tvelve hours, but mixed vith opu barani, it von't matter; your victim vill
be in tremendous pain, like you vere that day."
"Hmm, I guess you have a point there. All right, give me the vial." Rin handed
Ala the vial. "Now all that's left is to wait." Ala left the lab, vial in
hand, in a hurry.
At the time, Camiel was in her eighth month. It was time for her to return
to her doctor for a check-up. Her appointment wasn’t until the next day.
That morning, she got a call from a dear friend from the planet of the Mimes.
{Lady Baca! What a pleasant surprise! How is everything at the Temple of
Love?}
{All is well here, my child. Unfortunately I haven’t called you for pleasant
conversation. I’ve called to give you a warning.}
{A warning? About what?}
{Someone is planning to do you great harm.}
{Who, Baca?}
{Perhaps I should explain how this all began…}
Camiel listened eagerly at what Baca had to say. {While I was taking a short
nap, I had the most dreadful vision.}
{A vision?} Cami asked.
{It's part of the kyven, my dear. When a Holy Elder dies, his or her powers
move into the body of their one true love, if the kyven is sealed. When Hajin
died, I assumed his oracle-like abilities and have been having visions of
the future, and this one speaks of grave danger for you and your children.}
{Tell me.}
{I saw a woman, a human woman, with child and a mace-like weapon sticking
into her abdomen. I also saw her stabbing you in the stomach, in your current
condition and watching as the nine of you succumbed to death. I couldn't
understand her words, but there was a painful look about her.}
{Can you describe this woman?}
{Only that she was human. That was it.}
{All right. I'll be more cautious about that vision. Thanks, Baca.}
{I wish I could be of more help.}
{You've been plenty of help.}
When Sh'Ekrah got home from the military base, Camiel told him of Baca's
vision.
"So, she couldn't give you a more specific description of this person?"
"No, kesobo. She could only tell me that the pseron was a human female
who was with child."
"Damn it! Who could this person be? I can't watch every pregnant human female
that comes your way!"
"My spirit guides haven't given me any more information than Baca has. Then
again, my connection to them has been weakened because of my condition."
"Well, no matter what, I'll be by your side to protect you. I've taken tomorrow
off so I could go to the doctor with you anyway. I'll just have to be even
more cautious. Don't worry, alixia. You know I'd give my life to keep you
safe."
"I know."
"Okay, on a lighter note, how's our little regiment doing?"
"Your little regiment has been kicking up a storm all day!"
"Don't worry about it, Cami. They'll come out soon." Sh'Ekrah stroked his
love's now-huge stomach, causing Cami to feel very uncomfortable.
"Stop that! You know they kick when you do that!"
"I guess they must really like me."
"Or they take after you. That's gotta be the case!"
"Well, they are half Hash'a'Glith, so it's likely."
"Yea..." A small wave of depression rushed over her.
"What is it, Milady?"
"I am going to be so fat when this is all over. Bad enough I look like a
blimp now!"
"You'll work off the extra weight, Cami. And as for right now, you're the
sexiest, most beautiful mother-to-be ever."
"You really think so?"
"Of course not. I know so."
"You're the best, Sh'Ekrah."
"I know."
"So, how's the octs' room coming?"
"A little more work and it should be done by the time they're born."
"Good."
The following day, the Brightlights went to see Cami’s doctor. After her
check-up, the doctor informed them that Camiel was scheduled for a Cesarean
in two days. After the appointment was complete, the doctor gave them a copy
of the sonogram and sent them home. On their way to their vehicle, disaster
struck without warning. Neither one of them really noticed the slender human
female heading towards them. After all, they were warned the female would
be with child. Unfortunately, they became aware of her presence too late.
The woman quickly stabbed Camiel in the belly and ran off. Sh’Ekrah had to
make a split decision; chase the female down and catch her, or get his mate
back into the hospital.
After a brief moment, Sh'Ekrah decided his mate's safety--and the safety
of their children--was more important. So, he rushed her back into the hospital,
and ultimately the emergency room. It was later found out that Camiel had
suffered a knife wound, but the weapon itself had been poisoned by two foreign
toxins, which couldn't be identified. Sh'Ekrah immediately sent for Chatterbox,
whom he knew to have expertise in poisoning. While waiting for the parrot,
Sh'Ekrah went through the recent event in his mind. Something about that
woman was familar, he thought. Then it hit him like a ton of bricks.
"Astrala."
In the meantime, the poison was taking it’s toll on Camiel’s body. She screamed
in pain as death entangled her in its icy grip. The medical team working
on her was trying to get her to stop screaming so her heart rate could go
down and slow down the rate the poison was spreading throughout her body.
After a while, she couldn’t scream any longer because paralysis set in. Once
Chatterbox arrived, he was able to identify the toxins as opu barani and
keira root, one deadly to Mimians and the other deadly to humans. An antidote
was produced and administered to the patient. At first it didn’t look like
it was working, and at one point Camiel’s heart even stopped for a moment.
The octuplets had already been removed from the mother’s womb and rushed
to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). After the antidote ran it’s course,
Camiel was no longer paralyzed, but she was still in critical condition.
She kept going in and out of conciousness, at times asking where her babies
were. After about an hour’s time, Camiel was stabilized and exhausted. The
doctor finally allowed Sh’Ekrah to come see his mate.
Meanwhile, Sapphire, who was waiting in the waiting room, sensed something
amiss. Fearing the worst, she hopped into the metaphysical realm and immediately
cast a viewing spell. She quickly rushed to the NICU, where a second medical
team was working frantically to save one of the octuplets. Sapphire then
realized that the poison had a more immediate effect on the other seven babies,
and this one was going fast.
"There has to be a way to save that baby." She thought. "It was lucky enough
to survive that long." She then got an idea. "My Darkstar can keep her alive
long enough for the doctors to take out the venoms, but what if she ends
up like me? Plus, with her mother a Light Element, there's a chance I'll
do more harm than good. A slim one, but it's a chance."
"I can't worry about that now." she said to herself. "At least, there's a
chance Camiel won't lose all of her babies." Summoning up all of her energy,
she formed a black four-pointed star, which made its way into the physical
realm and into the suffering baby. "Please let this work." Sapphire prayed.
In the physical realm, the medical team was administering the antidote to
the only surviving octuplet, a baby girl. Her five brothers and other two
sisters were stillborn thanks to the poison that infected their mother. No
one knew how this small child survived what took her siblings, but they believed
it was a miracle. As soon as the child was completely stabilized, they all
pretty much saw the source of this miracle as Sapphire suddenly appeared
in the NICU room and collapsed.
Back in Camiel’s recovery room, Sh’Ekrah tried to comfort his mate. She was
in great distress because she didn’t know what happened to their babies.
“Sh’Ekrah, did they say what happened to the babies? Are they all right?”
“They haven’t told me anything yet, my love.”
Camiel grabbed the Brigadier’s arm and groaned as she was overcome with a
wave of dizziness.
“Cami, what’s wrong?”
“I don’t know, I feel…so empty. Why won’t they tell us what happened to our
babies?”
“They might still be working on them in NICU. Just be patient, alixia.
I‘m sure the doctor will tell us something soon.” He gently kissed her cheek
and stroked her forehead, trying to get her to relax.
After what seemed like forever, the doctor came into the recovery room. From
the look on his face, it was obvious he had grave news. Camiel immediately
asked him what happened to her babies.
"The poison sapped into them very quickly." the doctor explained. "I'm so
very sorry." For a moment, Camiel felt like her heart was torn out of her.
She gave out a mourning scream that shattered nearby windows. Sh'Ekrah immediately
embraced her, trying to offer some comfort to their mutual grief.
"They're all dead?" Sh'Ekrah asked the doctor.
"All but one, and she barely survived. I don't know how that is, but you
two have a strong baby girl."
"A daughter. We have a daughter." But Camiel was too busy sobbing to hear
the glimmer of good news. "Can we see her?"
"As soon as she's transported to a regular nursery, or I can have one of
the nurses carry her in."
“We would like to see her now…please.” The doctor nodded and went to get
a nurse. Sh’Ekrah looked down at his mate, who looked as if all her strength
had been sapped from her. “Cami, they are going to let us see our daughter.”
“Our…daughter?”
“Yes. One survived. She must have her mother’s strength.” At that moment,
a nurse carried the tiny infant in. She was so tiny she was almost swallowed
up in the pink blanket she was wrapped in.
"Oh Vasah. She's so beautiful."
"She looks so much like you."
"Thank the gods she didn't end up like the others."
"Yes, indeed. What do you want to name her?"
"We agreed on one Mimian name and one Hash'a'Glith name, right?" Sh'Ekrah
nodded. "For her Mimian name, I'm going to call her Navara (survivor). What
do you have for her Hash'a'Glith name?"
"Ke'Rika (lucky miracle)."
"Ke'Rika Navara Brightlight. It sounds perfect. Welcome to the world, my
lucky miracle. My survivor."
Ke'Rika certainly lived up to her name. She only had to stay in the hospital
overnight. She had made a complete recovery, which baffled doctors. She was
truly a lucky miracle. When Camiel's family heard what happened, everyone
wanted to rush to her side immediately. However, her mate asked them to hold
off to let Camiel and Ke'Rika rest. Sh'Ekrah did all he could to comfort
Camiel, who had gone into a deep depression. While Dani took care of Cami,
Sh'Ekrah took on the difficult task of planning their seven other babies'
funeral.
Sapphire came over to visit. After recovering from her energy drain at the
hospital, she took a taxi over to see Cami. She had to tell them about Ke'Rika
and she had to tell them now. When she got there, she immediately sensed
a strong power source. "Courage, Seska." she said to herself as the door
opened. "Hi," she greeted Sh'Ekrah. "Is Cami taking visitors?"
"Sorry, Seska." Sh'Ekrah explained. "She's still resting."
"How is she?"
"Still depressed. I'm just grateful that she and the baby are all right."
"Can I see her? The baby, that is?"
"She's resting now. But it wouldn't hurt for you to take a peek." As Sh'Ekrah
led Sapphire to Ke'Rika's room, she felt the power source growing stronger.
The instant she saw Ke'Rika sleeping in her hand-me-down cradle, her worst
fears were realized.
"Oh, no..." Sapphire said softly. "By the gods, what have I done?!"
"Seska? Seksa, what's wrong?"
"I have to tell you something, and I doubt you'll like it." They went back
downstairs. where she explained everything that happened in the NICU that
day. "Now your daughter's mutated because of me! I was afraid this would
happen!"
"Seska, relax. From what you've told me, there was no other alternative.
You did what you felt you had to do, and you obviously saved her life. I
am grateful."
"Sir, with all due respect, I--"
"Not another word. Maybe you feel guilty about what you did, but I don't.
Camiel and I both owe you our daughter's life."
"There is a chance that she will develop powers like her mother's, only they'll
be drawn by shadows."
"I understand. We'll deal with that when the time comes."
"I just can't help but feel guilty about all of this."
"Is it because of the source of your powers?" Sapphire looked at him in shock.
"Yes, Seska, I know about your biological relationship with Mon*Star."
"Cami told you?"
"She didn't have to. I found out after observing your powers more closely.
It's no coincidence that they're similar to his own...when he was stronger.
But if you think I'm going to discriminate you because of that, you're wrong.
I don't judge by blood."
"Thank...thank you, sir."
"I do need a favor from the SilverHawks, though."
"Oh? What is it?"
"The woman who attacked Cami and caused seven of my babies to be stillborn.
I'm certain that it was Astrala. Just make sure that they catch her, before
I get my hands on her."
"Understood."
Commander Stargazer ordered SteelWill and Condor to find Astrala and question
her about her whereabouts on the day Camiel was stabbed. Moeba and SteelHeart
were busy in the forensics lab working to identify any physical evidence
linking Astrala to the crime. The families of the Meglouses and the Brightlights
put up a cash reward for any information leading to an arrest. As all of
this was taking place, the day had come for the babies’ funeral. Lady Dani
had to hold Ke’Rika because Camiel was still very weak. The new mother really
wasn’t paying attention to the ceremony. Her emotions were in turmoil. She
struggled with feelings of emptiness, anger, and sorrow. Seeing all of the
now extra baby furniture at the house hadn’t helped either. Sh’Ekrah decided
to donate the extra cribs to charity. Camiel sat on the front row of the
temple sanctuary half listening to what was being said. Her mate had an arm
around her shoulders while her mother held her hand.
The funeral itself merged both Mimian and Hash'a'Glith traditions. The latter
called for the cremation of the bodies to release the souls trapped within
the now-dead shell back to the heavens. The former featured seven little
candles--one for each baby. As soon as prayers and eulogies were done, the
candles were blown out one by one. First were the grandparents, both maternal
and patrichal, then Camiel's brothers blew two candles out. Then, it was
one candle left, for the grieving parents to blow out. Camiel was still too
weak, so Sh'Ekrah blew the final candle out himself. The entire funeral party
made its way to the courtyard, where the pyre was all set and the smell of
ash tulips were strong. Sh'Ekrah helped his mate towards the pyre, where
seven tiny corpses lay. The parents, with a heavy heart, gripped the torch
and lit the pyre. As soon as the flames went up, Camiel totally broke down
sobbing. Her mate picked her up and carried her a safe distance from the
pyre, and as they watched the remains of their stillborn children burn to
ash, Sh'Ekrah made a solemn vow to find Astrala and make her pay dearly for
this grief.
As Sh’Ekrah tended to his grieving spouse he saw some movement out of the
corner of his eye. Seconds later he saw a dark figure heading straight for
Lady Dani and the baby, who were sitting nearby. Fortunately, James saw the
person too and apprehended the person before any harm could be done. After
restraining the would be attacker, Bluegrass removed the face mask.
“Well, well, would ya looky here? I guess the Commander can call Condor and
SteelWill back. We’ve got our suspect right here!” James read Astrala her
rights as he cuffed her.
Despite her restraints, Astrala continued to struggle and shouted out curses.
Camiel cautiously approaced her, both shocked and enraged at her presence.
"Why?" she whispered.
Astrala looked at her in a cold manner. "Oh don't give me that shocked grieving
crap!" she snapped. "It wasn't like I was trying to hurt you, anyway; you
were merely there. No...over thirty years ago, that bastard whom you call
a husband took something very important to me, and I aim to even the score.
Seven out of nine isn't exactly my personal best, but I'll finish the job
to perfection."
Sh'Erkah gently moved his mate aside and confronted the assassin. "You bitch..."
he started. "Do you see what you've done!?"
"Now you know what it's like to lose a child, Brightlight! See what you put
me through all those years?! Go ahead and convict me; I got nothing to lose--thanks
to you!"
"Get her out of here...NOW!"
When Astrala was taken to Hawk Haven she gave a full confession. She refused
to tell them where she got the poison. Stargazer and Condor both had a feeling
Glycerin was involved, but they needed solid proof. All of the forensic evidence
was in, and along with the confession and witnesses to Astrala’s attack at
the funeral, the DA believed they had a solid case against the Mob moll.
The trial would be held on Bedlama, where the crimes occurred. Astrala would
be charged with seven counts of first degree murder, and two counts of attempted
murder.
Only a few days after Astrala's arrest, her trial began. Charles Banner took
on her defense, despite her protests. It didn't matter which way the trial
turned; she had no reason to fight the law. She didn't even bat an eye when
Sh'Ekrah was called by the Prosecution to testify. No surprise; with Camiel
in such a weakened state, there was no way for her to give a count of the
events. Mikel and Detia came to the trial to show their support. As soon
as Sh'Ekrah was settled in the witness stand, the baliff came over with a
small rectangle box. "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and
nothing but the truth. So sworn on all that is Holy to you?"
"I do." he said.
"You may sit."
Sh'Ekrah sat, cool and collected. But anyone who knew him personally knew
that he was struggling to keep under control so he doesn't take the law into
his own hands. Too much had already been lost without his temper lashing
out. The Prosecutor walked over to the stand. "If you would, please state
your name for the courts."
"Sh'Ekrah Brightlight."
The Prosecuting attorney continued. "Could you describe the events of last
week for us?"
Sh'Ekrah gave a full, detailed description on that day's happening. The only
things he kept quiet about were Baca's vision and Sapphire's rescue. His
voice was calm, with a little bit of a quiver, possibly from his own grief.
When he finished, the Prosecution thanked him and allowed the defense up.
"Would you repeat for us, please, your full name, sir, and any titles or
rank you may hold?"
"Brigadier General Sh'Ekrah Brightlight; Local Bedlamian Military Police."
"Have you had any run-ins with my client prior to the day in question?"
"Not recently."
"Is that a yes or a no, Brigadier?"
"Yes."
"Could you explain the last time you saw my client, aside from the day in
question?"
"Objection!" the Prosecutor shouted. "Irrelevant to the case!"
"I am trying to establish the personal motive of my client for her actions."
Charles explained.
"I'll allow it." the judge said. "Objection noted." Charles repeated his
question.
"It was about thirty years ago," Sh'Ekrah explained. "During Governor Xander's
campaign. The defendant was the assassin hired to take out Governor Xander
and secure Mob power over Bedlama. She had attempted to use a rifle about
100 yards from the site, but was stopped by Commander Stargazer of the SilverHawks."
"And she was arrested?"
"Not immediately. She then tried to charge at the potential Governor at the
time, but she was stopped."
"How so?"
"I stabbed her in the abdomen with my weapon."
"And after?"
"Shortly after her arrest, it was learned the defendant was two months pregnant."
"And she miscarried due to her injuries?"
"Yes."
"So, in other words, all of this was for pure revenge."
"Yes."
"Then what she did to your mate was all in a manner of grief. So, you're
here, testifying on the murder of unborn children when in fact you have done
this yourself!"
"Objection!" the Prosecution shouted.
"It's ironic that you lack the ability to practice what you're preaching
now!"
"Objection!"
"Then again, what else can I expect from a man who marries a much younger
alien slut who's considered a freak among her own species?!"
"OBJECTION!"
"Counsel, that is enough!" the judge yelled. By then, Sh'Ekrah looked like
he was about to snap. He actually gripped Charles by the neck.
"Don't you dare call her that!" he hissed. "If you knew the kind of grief
my mate is going through now, you wouldn't be so quick to accept this case!
Besides, I only accidentally caused the death of one unborn child two months
old while your client deliberately murdered seven of my children who were
eight months in the womb and were stillborn!"
As court security pried Mr. Baner from the Brigadier’s grip, someone cried
out from the gallery. Everyone turned to see Lady Detia struggling to stand
up and holding her pregnant belly. When she noticed everyone looking her
way, she frowned.
“Don’t mind me folks. I’m just having a baby, that’s all.” The people sitting
next to her quickly got out of her and her spouse’s way as they exited the
court room. After order was restored in the courtroom, the judge ordered
a short recess. During the break, Sh’Ekrah decided to call home to check
on his precious mate.
At home, Cami felt some relief when her mate called in. "I'm doing a little
bit better, love." she said. "What about you? I faintly sensed some distressed."
"Banner said something that made me snap, that's all." her mate explained.
"Plus, your mother's going into labor."
"She's what?!"
"I know! Don't worry, I'm sure she's all right." At that moment, there was
a high pitched scream. "As all right as can be expected during labor."
"Oh Vasah!! In a courtroom?! I'm sure Pahda must be losing it."
"Don't worry, alixia; if he completely loses it, the Asylum Planet will take
care of him." Cami had to chuckle a little at that. In her arms, Ke'Rika
started cooing into the phone. Sh'Ekrah started playing with her over the
phone a little bit, which made her laugh.
"Will you be home soon, kesobo?"
"As soon as the verdict is in. Don't worry, Camiel; Astrala's going to pay
for what she's done to us."
After an ambulance finally arrived to take Detia to the hospital, the court
case resumed. The mutant badger called his client to the stand to testify.
Sh’Ekrah had returned just in time to witness her testimony. After she was
sworn in, Astrala sat down in the witness box. Her expression spoke volumes.
She looked as if she didn’t want to be up there and wanted the whole thing
to be over. However, her lawyer insisted that she testify.
"State your name for the court." Banner said. Astrala just looked at him,
as if that was a rhetorical question.
"Astrala." she said.
"Your real name, madam, if you please."
"You're kidding! Fine. Maria Francisa Perez. But it's Astrala to you, buster."
"Could you state, Miss Per--Astrala, to the court, the events of last week?"
"With pleasure. I was attacking little Sundance and her troop in hopes that
all nine of them died."
"And how did you describe this attack?"
"It was a single stab wound, the knife was poisoned."
"And did it work?"
"Not really. I only got seven of the little brats, which left one and the
little woman. I planned to finish the job at once."
"How so?"
"I attacked them at the funeral, but was apprehended before I could do anything."
"Could you state for the courts, in your own words, the reason for your attacks?"
"Yes. It was for a personal vendetta. You've heard the Brigadier's story
about how I lost my own baby to his actions, but there was more. The injuries
I had acquired that day caused my implant to malfunction."
"An implant?"
"Standard birth control for prostitutes; beats the pill any day. Anyways,
the implant malfunctioned and from what I was told they had to do an entire
hysterectomy to save my life."
"I see. Anything else?"
"After what happened, I swore Brightlight would pay for this, dearly. I saw
my chance the moment the Mob learned about his courtship with Sundance seven
years ago."
"Then why didn't you take your revenge at that time?"
"It wasn't enough. I wanted him to feel what it was like to have my pain.
Sundance was merely there. The moment I lost my baby and reproductive system,
I lost everything. I needed to replicate that feeling just for him. I knew
the closer they got, the more devastating it would be when he lost her."
"Did any of the other Mobsters ever attack her?"
"Only Mon*Star. Yesman wasn't the type to chase non-consenting women, Glycerin
and I were straight and the rest of the Mob was too scared of Brightlight."
"And you know this for a fact?"
"Zero the Memory Thief told me personally that Brightlight told him that
if any one--and I mean, anyone ladies and gentlemen--so much as thought about
messing with Sundance in anyway, he'd make sure that unfortunate sap didn't
have to worry about the Penal Planet."
"And you perceived this as a threat?"
"Zero certainly did. It was confirmed when the Mob's new pimp attempted to
rape Sundance, only to return with a castration."
"Nothing further." Baner then took his seat. The prosecution decided to rest
after that testimony. Closing arguments were given and the jury departed
to decide the verdict. During the wait, Charles was pleading with his client
to take a deal offered by the DA.
"Ala, just listen!" he cried.
"I heard what you have to say and I am not interested!" Ala argued.
"But, this is the best deal we can do at this point! Your testimony isn't
helping matters!"
"Hello! You just said the DA is willing to offer me murder two in exchange
for testifying against whoever gave me that poison. I refuse."
"I know it was Glycerin."
"You can't prove it."
"Oh, come on! I studied the Mob's old rackets! I know she's helped you out
on previous kills."
"So? Still can't prove it."
"Astrala..."
"Look, let's just pretend what you're saying is true. Glycerin is like a
sister to me and we made a pact to each other upon entering the Mob; we don't
rat on each other, no matter what."
"I understand that, but--"
"You go to that DA and tell him to stuff that deal of his right up his ass
because I ain't taking!" With that said, Baner let it be. Two and a half
hours later, jury was back with a verdict.
"Madame Foreperson, the jury has decided upon a unanimous verdict?" the judge
asked.
"We have, Your Honor." the foreperson replied.
"What say you?"
"Commonwealth vs. Maria Perez. On counts one through seven on murder in the
first degree, we find the defendant, Maria Perez, guilty as charged."
"Very well. The defendant is hereby sentenced to capital punishment by means
of the gas chamber upon two years from today. Members of the jury, this completes
your service. Court is adjourned."
Needless to say, Brigadier Brightlight was pleased with the sentence. He
doubted Astrala would have the nerve to appeal, which was a good thing because
he definitely didn’t want anything to delay her sentence.
“It’s too bad they won’t execute her right now.”
When Sh’Ekrah exited the court house, he was mobbed by cameras and reporters.
The cacophony of voices quieted down long enough for him to make a short
statement.
“Ms. Perez got what she deserved. That’s all I have to say.”
The reporters resumed shouting questions at him, which he ignored as he headed
home to check on his mate.
At home, Cami was breast feeding her precious daughter, who was practically
gulping down the milk. {You are your father's daughter.} she whispered to
Ke'Rika. {The both of you seem to have bottomless pits for stomachs.} Ke'Rika
just cooed.
"Now isn't that just cute?" a voice said. Cami looked up to see her mate.
"My two favorite girls together."
"Kesobo! I didn't hear you come in!"
"Yea, well, trial ended."
"And Astrala?" Sh'Erkah sat beside Cami, embracing her.
"Is on death row. I said she'd pay for what she did and I meant it."
"When is her execution?"
"Two years from today."
"Oh..."
"Cami, I know this won't bring our children back, but at least...knowing
they're avenged will let their spirits rest easier."
"I understand, love."
"So, heard anything from your folks regarding your new sister? Last time
I saw them, the ambulence came."
"Oh, yea. Pahda called, and he was in such a jitter!"
"Uh oh...what happened?"
"Mahda gave birth in the ambulance!"
"Oh gods!"
"Yea. It was so wild!"
"Good thing it didn't happen in the courtroom."
"Oh yea!"
"So, what's her name?"
"Kyla (spirit song), and they got Zantassia as a middle name."
"After Duchess Vernadeua?"
"Yes, after Aunt Zan."
"Oh, okay..."
A couple days later, Detia and Mikel brought Kyla over to visit her sister,
Camiel. Camiel was now up and about. She had gotten much stronger since the
attack. Lady Dani was going to return to the Planet of the Mimes soon but
she wanted to see Kyla before she left. Detia and Camiel held the two baby
girls in front of each other as a way of introducing them.
{Look, Kyla. That’s your niece. She’s a couple weeks older than you. Yeah,
that’s odd, but you’ll get used to it.} Detia handed her baby over to Mikel
who set her down in the play yard on her back. He watched as she shoved her
tiny fist in her mouth then begin to suck on it.
{Think she might be hungry, Dee?}
{I just fed her before we came over here. I’ll feed her again after I finish
talking to our daughter.}
{All right, love.}
After Cami set Ke'Rika in the play yard with her aunt, mother and daughter
went to sit on the couch and talk.
{So, baby, how are you feeling?}
{Physically, much better. Emotionally, not as good.}
{Oh, Cami...}
{I feel cheated, Mah! Seven of my babies and that bitch took them away before
I could even hold them! What could she have possibly gotten from all this?}
{She got the death penalty, which is what she deserved.}
{But it didn't bring her baby back. Look, Mah, what happened to her was a
terrible thing. But Sh'Ekrah didn't mean to cause her baby to die!}
Later that night, as all in the house were asleep, three luminous figures
appeared over Ke'Rika's cradle as she slept.
"This child is truly special. She has so much strength and yet is unaware
of how to use that strength."
{She was to be the next Child of Light, but something's gone wrong. That
shadow power had caused the light to go out.}
@But it had to be done. The shadow power was needed to save her life. Perhaps,
when she has proven herself, she might become rather a Child of Shadow. Balance
is the key to defeating the purist demons.@
"Amazing at what happens when mortal circumstance prevails."
{Look what that parrot's done for our granddaughter!}
@Their fates were destined to intertwine; the parrot was merely a catalyst.
Right now, you must watch over your descendant as she prepares to unlock
the power within.@
"What if she isn't ready?"
{If she's anything like her mahda, she'll be ready.}
@She must be, for the sake of all of her loved ones she must be ready to
face the Avatar.@
"If he ever comes."
{He'll come. The El Undars are concentrating their powers. I can feel it.}
@Yes. It is only a matter of time before he arises; it cannot be stopped.
But it can be delayed until the time comes for the Child of Shadows and the
Avatar to face combat.@
As this meeting was taking place in the spirit realm, Camiel had awakened
in the master bedroom. She listened to hear if the baby was crying. When
she heard nothing, she decided to go check on the baby anyway. Because he
was a light sleeper, Sh’Ekrah felt his mate stir.
“Alixia, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I’m going to check on the baby.”
“I might as well go with you since I’m already awake.”
“Very well.”
When the new parents got to their baby's room, they beheld a wonderous sight.
Seven little orbs were hovering around Ke'Rika. Cami swore she heard the
orbs speak.
Baby sister, who survived our doom, please accept our strength as a gift
from us. Let our spirits guide you into adulthood and in the darkest of times.
Let yourself use our final gift for all that is good. With that, the
seven orbs went right into Ke'Rika.
Camiel looked at her mate then back to the baby.
You saw it too, kesobo?
Sh’Ekrah nodded an affirmative. As if that sight wasn’t astounding enough,
the couple finally noticed a very tall, dark man standing off to the side.
“She’s going to need that strength more than you know,” the man warned, his
dark eyes focused on the two parents. “She’s a very special child with a
very special gift. You may not understand what’s going on right now, but
she’ll tell you not long after she learns to speak…” With a serious nod,
the dark man vanished. As soon as that happened, Sh’Ekrah looked to his mate
for some sort of explanation.
That was my grandfather, Jawan. My second spirit guide.
I see.
The parents continued to converse through their kyven bond so they wouldn’t
wake the baby.
I think I remember an old Terran legend Mahda once told me. When there's
only one survivor of a multiple birth, that baby gains the spiritual strength
of the stillborn siblings.
And you think this legend has something to do with what had just happened?
If what Jawan says is true, we may have a Child of Shadows on our hands.
That was what Seska told me when she came to see you.
Yes, she told me about what she did to save Ke'Rika.
I wanted her to grow into a normal child, Camiel. To not worry about the
fate of the universe and all of that.
She'll still be a normal child, Sh'Erkah. No matter what the gods have in
store for her, she's still our daughter. We'll raise her as such and when
the time comes,
She must prepare for her destiny. I know. I just hope whatever she has to
do doesn't get her killed.
The months seemed to fly by quickly as both Ke’Rika and Kyla grew older and
stronger. Both had become very active, curious babies. Both their fathers
had just about gone over board baby proofing their homes. They both agreed
they could never be too safe. One day, Camiel had brought Ke’Rika over to
visit with her grandparents and her baby aunt. Phantom was supposed to come
over to visit with them, but she had called Detia to cancel because she had
forgotten about her appointment with Moeba.
“Girl, you’re so busy running around you probably don’t know what you’re
doin!”
“Hey, I can’t help it if I’m busy! I’m a working woman. You should understand.
Anyway, I’ll swing by after my appointment. I’ll call and let you know when
I’m on my way.”
(Phantom)
I hate when I forget something, like that appointment with Moeba. Normally
that doesn't happen but of late, things haven't been normal either. Between
the small aches I wake up with in the morning and the general mood swings
over the last month or so, things have been....interesting. Bless Will for
his patience with me.
As I sit and wait for the results, I get the sudden urge to call Mother and
see what's going on with everyone on New Eden. I haven't talked with anyone
other then Raven and Jenny on a regular basis for a while. No idea who's
expecting or what. Haven't even heard anything on the betting pools either.
"Phantom?"
"Hmm? Oh sorry, just spacing a little while in thought. So everything still
in place and working fine?" I ask absently.
"Yes. You are in excellent health and so is the fetus. It is still early
in the development stages though. You should cut out-"
"Excuse me?" I interupted Moeba.
"Hmm?"
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I heard you say 'fetus' as in developing
child." I said with a half chuckle.
"I did. You are in your first trimester. Approximatly.." she looked at the
chart in her hand, "Five weeks. Give or take a day." She looked at me and
blinked.
"No way..That's impossible. I can't have kids." Good thing I never stood
up or else I would have flopped down.
"But you can. The slow regeneration process was completed two months ago.
All your organs are in perfect shape."
"No you don't get it. I'm not suppose to have kids. I had a complete hysterectomy
after my time in the camps. Too messed up to save anything so it got yanked."
I've got to be as pale as a ghost by now.
"Oh dear...." Moeba said.
"No Shit......" I manged to 'wave' off Em's inquiry as to what was going
on that had me so upset. "Listen. NO one is to find out untill I say so.
Got me? That includes Will and Em as well as the Commander. I ain't under
his command and the twins know better then to pry into things untill I give
the OK."
"But don't-"
"NO one Moeba." I said as I grabbed my hat and jacket, taking off out of
the Med-bay like a bull with it's tail on fire.
Mother.. I hope your up to a looong chat this evening.
