Baby Blues

Part 2

When neither Detia nor Camiel heard anything from Phantom for several hours, they both got a little concerned. After Cami took Ke‘rika home, Detia fed Kyla, changed her, and bathed her. After getting the baby settled down in her crib, Detia gave Zan a call to see if everything was all right.

“I hope she didn’t find out that she’s seriously sick,” Detia thought. “The way she runs herself, I wouldn’t be surprised if her immune system was a little weaker. I hope everything is ok.”

When she tried to call the main line was busy so the answering service came on. After several tries, Detia left a brief message asking Zan to call her back.

Of course, by the time anyone else found out about Zan's...condition, she was already in her fourth month and ultimately showing. Ke'Rika and Kyla were in their tenth month, learning to speak and walk. Lady Detia wanted to throw Zan a baby shower, and Zan just about got everyone involved in the famous RunningHorse baby pool.

After all the planning and schmoozing and phone tag were done, two baby showers were planned. Detia and Camiel were throwing one at the Brightlight’s home and Zan’s family on New Eden were also throwing one about two months later. By the second shower, Phantom and her husband, SteelWill, would more than likely know the sex of their baby. When Kyla and Ke’Rika were eleven months old, they got to attend their first baby shower. They girls had gotten quite big and very active. They had everyone’s hands full, including their godmother, Zanatasia. Zan loved and appreciated all of the gifts, but she was more focused on the cute little girls, one of whom was her namesake.

"Zanna, hat?" Ke'Rika asked, looking at Phantom with those big hazel eyes.

"What is it, Ke'Ri?" Zan asked. "You want my hat?"

"Hat."

"Oh, all right." Zan placed her black hat on top of Ke'Ri's head, after which the little one ran off. "Hey!!"

"My hat now!" Ke'Ri giggled, trying to elude Zan. Ke'Ri just about crashed into every guest in the house during the little chase. When it seemed Ke'Ri was gonna get caught, she passed the hat to Kyla. "Run, Kya!"

Kyla toddled over to where Will and Mikel were on the floor putting together a baby swing. She slapped the black stetson on top of her father’s head, startling him. As Mikel reached up to see what was on his head, Will grabbed it and plopped in on little Kyla’s head. Kyla sat on the floor giggling and pulling the much too large hat over her eyes. By this time, Zan had caught up with Ke’Rika and her hat.

Zan placed her hat back on her head, and held Ke'Rika to her face. "You got a lotta nerve taking my hat, you!" Zan said.

"Zanna funny." Ke'Ri laughed.

"Yeah, well Ke'Ri silly!"

"Hug!!!" Zan gave Ke'Ri a hug, only to have her hat swiped again.

"You've gotta be kidding me!" Zan cried as she pursued Ke'Ri yet again.

The little one was finally intercepted by her Papa. He lifter her up from the floor and cradled her in his arms.

@What’s this you have here, Ke’Ri?@

Sh’Ekrah took Zan’s hat from his child and handed it back to the human.

“Thanks. Thought I’d never see my hat again!” Zan joked as she straightened her hat out.

"Hat go bye-bye." Ke'Ri sighed. "Do poo."

"All right, little one. Time to get you changed." As Sh'Ekrah took his daughter to another room to change her diaper, he saw Chatts barge in, seeing the diaper changing process.

"Now I know who does the dirty work in this family." Chatts commented.

Ke’Rika laughed as Chatterbox pretended to be overwhelmed by the odor coming form her soiled diaper.

“Ha, ha, very funny, Chatts,” Sh’Ekrah snorted as he finished cleaning up his daughter’s bottom.

“Good thing the baby has a sense of humor!”

Meanwhile, at the MATI base, Lord Tkkla and Lady Pijol were going over new plans when they were told they had a visitor. When they saw who it was, they gapped at the seemingly middle-aged Mua that just walked in. She had red colorings and grey hair to her waist. She was wearing an elegant black cloak that covered her robes. Her eyes, a cold ice blue, stared at the two with great distain.

{High El Undar Birilla.} Tkkla greeted the woman. {What a nice surprise.}

{Yes, I seem to be attracting plenty of surprises these days.} Birilla said, a glare forming towards Tkkla. Not long after, Tkkla rose into the air and felt like he was choking. {And these surprises are anything but nice.}

{You seem displeased for some reason.} Tkkla said hoarsely.

{Displeased? The Child of Light has achieved and sealed the kyven bond with her one true love, the Follower's power in Limbo is weak, and it is spreading towards Tampala, causing many of the El Undars back home to be persecuted, now why in the name of Wensitu would I be displeased?!} Tkkla suddenly found himself hurled into the wall. {You've greatly dissapointed me, Tkkla.}

{Lady Birilla, with all due respect.} Pijol said. {Wouldn't you have sensed the kyven being achieved with your great power?}

{We would have had the Child of Light's aura not been blocked by foreign magics.}

{Foreign...oh no!}

{I warned Tilor, Wensitu bless him, about those mercenaries. But he insisted that they'd get the job done. The Hav'Throth may be professionals, my dear, but they allow their morals to get in the way of our business, especially since Mistress Zantara is no longer leading them.}

{How long has the aura been blocked?}

{Long enough for her to conceive and bear one child.}

{Just what we need; more taint!}

{I'm afraid it gets worse, dear Pijol. The child seems to inherit her Mahda's powers, but the polarity of them is exactly the opposite. We're dealing with a Child of Light AND a Child of Shadows should the newborn manifest her gift.}

{My Lady, Tilor told me about summoning the Avatar once. Is it too late to do so?}

{That is exactly why I've come here. You have a son of Mua and Tch heritage, correct?}

{Yes. Goki.}

{I figured. Mylahn, come!} At that moment, a dark-yellow skinned girl with red hair appeared into the room. {You recall our dear friend, Ginneda Tivert, do you not?}

{Yes, I do.}

{This is her granddaughter, and my apprentice, Mylahn Erun. She's been very promising in her studies of the dark arts and is to take my place when Wensitu calls for me.}

{She looks Hnn, but her skin's too dark. Hnn-Wua heritage?}

{Yes. A child between Mylahn and Goki will result in the rise of the Avatar.}

{I see.}

{I suggest you prepare your son for the upcoming ceremonies. We must do this quickly, before we are completely shattered.}

{Yes, Lady Birilla.}

Prince Goki was summoned immediately and told the news of his future mate’s arrival.

{Her name is Mylahn Erun. She is Lady Ginny’s granddaughter,} Pijol explained. {She’s half Wua and half Hnn. Very attractive. I think you’ll like her.}

Prince Goki looked up at his mahda and simply nodded. He knew this day would come. The day that he would set the events in motion that would bring the MATI to victory. That was after all his name. Lord Tkkla and his pitawan gave him that name for that very reason. He prepared himself for the betrothal/planting ceremony. He did not know this female, nor did he care for females in general. However, his duty as a prince overshadowed his feelings or lack thereof. He only had to mate with her until she became pregnant. After that, he could continue the lifestyle he had come to enjoy…and that no one in his family knew about.

In separate quarters, Mylahn was preparing for the ceremony when her mentor came to check up on her.

{Lady Birilla,} Mylahn greeted in fluent Mua. {I am almost ready for the ceremonies.}

{I can see that.} Birilla replied. She stared at her apprentice for a second. {Mylahn, is everything all right?}

{Yes, Lady Birilla. Why would you think something was wrong?}

{You seem nervous.}

{I do??}

{Mylahn, I've had you under my fold since you were able to walk. I can tell when you're nervous.}

{Only a little, my Lady. Plus, I have some doubts that I would be able to conceive the Avatar.}

{We've talked about this, Mylahn. The preparations you've undergone since your first growth spurt will guarantee the Avatar's conception. It is highly unlikely you will not. If that actually happens, there is always Tkkla's dear granddaughter.}

{Binah?! But I doubt she's--}

{I've given her Pahda explicit instructions to start feeding her the plants of the barani flower since her first growth spurt.}

{Even so, with all due respect, where are we going to find a male of Mua and Wua heritage?}

{I have a candidate in mind, but I assure you, my dear, that Binah is merely a back-up, an insurance should something go wrong. Despite our perfect planning, farndah happens. I know that from experience.}

{I see. I respect your decision, my Lady.}

{One thing concerns me, though.}

{What?}

{The Child of Light's entawan. The gods truly picked one for her this lifetime. He's going to be a serious problem.}

{How so, my Lady? He is merely a mortal.}

{But he's a strong mortal. Do you know what happens when true lovers who have achieved kyven are separated by death?}

{The survivng lover gains the strength of his or her dead one.}

{Or in the case of Holy Elders, his or her powers. Which means it's too late to kill the Child of Light now. We do so, her powers go into her entawan and from what I've heard of him, he will be a bigger threat than she is!}

{What about the spells that will manipulate the kyven?}

{They won't work now that the kyven is sealed. Which means we have to tread carefully. Enough of this talk; the time for the ceremony draws near and we must hurry to your new mate.}

{Yes, my Lady.}

On Hawk Haven, Jon finally found the time to catch up with Will during a shift break. He'd noticed the burly SteelTwin looking tired and ragged around the edges as the impending arrival of Zan's surprise baby drew closer.

"How's it going, Will?" he asked, offering him a cup of coffee and sitting down next to him at the table.

Will grunted, sipping the steaming beverage. "OKay, I guess. Sort of strange. Zan and Lisa are chattering all the time with whichever of Zan's sisters has turned up. I wonder every so often how necessary I am."

Jon cleared his throat. "Listen, Will, we've served together a long time, and I consider you to be a good friend. But Zan's my friend,too. So I feel like i have to say something. You are planning to do the right thing, right?"

Will just stared at him a moment, then chuckled. "I knew you were a little out of it after the Wyvern trial, Skipper, but I thought you'd notice, even if no one else did, really." He held up his left hand, bare of armor, and Jon saw right away want he was looking at. Around Will's finger was a silver ring, Celtic knotwork engraved around it. "Zan and I were married shortly after the trial ended. It just...seemed like the right time."

Jon chuckled and shook his head. "You're right. I was out of it. Congratulations. And tell Zan I wish you all the best." His finished his coffee and stood up. If you ever need a night away from the girls, you know where to find us." He tossed his cup into the recycler and left.

Soon it was pretty much common knowledge that SteelWill and Phantom had gotten married. The ones who hadn’t known, which is everyone but Emily and Detia, were surprised that they had kept that a secret for so long. Those same people were unaware of the secret dealings of the MATI. Empress Birilla had completed Mylahn’s preparations and Prince Goki was also ready to meet his betrothed.
His personal assistant Curat (helper), made sure his garments were just right.

~Are you nervous, your Highness?~

~Not really. I’m just fulfilling my duty to my people.~

~I hear Lady Erun is very powerful and beautiful.~

~I’m sure the Empress would not have chosen an inferior female to bring forth the Avatar.~

~This will a great moment in the name of purity, my Lord.~

Goki smiled to himself as he looked himself over in the mirror.

~Perfect. Curat, get your hand bells and announce my arrival.~

~Yes, your Highness.~

The servant grabbed up his hand bells and headed for the door. Before he could step out, Goki pulled him back and gave him a light kiss behind the ear.

~No need to be jealous, my dear. This month will pass before you know it,~ he whispered.

A few days after their conversation, Will caught up with Jon in Command. "Hey, Lieutenant. How's it going?"

"Same old same old. How's Zan?"

"Tired, and cranky. She discovered the other day that she can't fit comfortably behind the stick of the HummingBird anymore, or the Goose, so she's more or less grounded. Then Lisa told her to get her butt off a horse. It's been a bad week."

Jon stifled a laugh at the thought of anyone telling Phantom what to do, much less being obeyed. "And the baby?"

"A-okay, according to Moeba. And Lisa agrees with her assessment. So it's just a matter of waiting it out at this point." Will's calm voice was belied by his nervous fingers as he twisted a paperclip into a myriad of shapes.

"Not too much longer, right?" Jon asked.

"A couple of months, give or take. So listen, Zan would really like you to come to dinner tonight. Her mom's there, and some of her family. She'd really like for them to meet you."

Jon thought about it a moment, and remembered the unfortunate assignment he'd made for kitchen duty that night. The whole team would be lucky if there was anything edible in the Mess tonight.  Sapphire was a good trooper, but her cooking skills still left a great deal to be desired. "I'd like that, Will. What time?"

"Right after shift is over. Seymore will pick us up in the hangar."

Zan's ranch house boasted three stories above ground, and as they approached the front door, Jon could see basement windows set just above ground level. There were outbuildings to one side, and fenced in corrals holding horses peeked out from behind the yard. "I didn't know you had this much land," he said as they climbed the steps to the porch.

"It was Zan's idea," Will said. "She's running a branch of the family business. Running Horses is a huge operation on New Eden, especially since they have almost no private ground vehicles. Everyone walks, rides, or takes a wagon or something. Only the public transportation and the government have powered transportation."

"You've got to be kidding."

"Nope. And let me tell you, most of the people are very healthy. We should find a way to recruit some of them for the SilverHawk teams." The door opened as Will reached for the knob.

"I wondered if you were going to stand out here all night talking." A woman with graying hair and brilliant green eyes stood in the doorway.

"Nope. You're going to have to feed us, I'm afraid. Lisa, this is Lieutenant Jon Quick. Jon, this is Zan's mother, Lisa RunningHorse."

"A pleasure, Mrs. RunningHorse." He offered his hand and she took it.

"It's Lisa. Come on in. Supper will be on the table in a few minutes. Get washed up, Will, and say hello to your wife. Zan, Will's home. Drop whatever your doing and come act like his wife."

"Thank, Mom," Zan said snidely, but Jon noticed that she did as she was told. She went straight to Will and managed to hug him around her very obvious belly and kissed him, then turned to Jon. He was hugged as well, and to his surprise, kissed on both cheeks. "It's good to see you. I'm really glad you came."

"Thanks for asking. You look...good."

"I look pregnant. Believe me, I find it as strange as you do." She hugged her mother, then wandered further into the house. Lisa followed, issuing orders to a host of unseen individuals.

Jon looked at Will, and he just shrugged. "Don't ask. She's just in a good mood. I'd let it be."

Jon nodded. "Whatever you say."

Dinner was chaotic. Conversation was conducted at a dull roar, flowing between Zan and Will, her mother, her brother James and his wife Jennie, along with their two children, and Zan's three sisters, Elizabeth, Lisa 'call me SilverWing,' and Melissa. Jon had gotten the feeling when he'd been introduced to the girls that he was being auditioned for the part of husband, and made a point of sitting near the men. It was easy to see though, why the table was extra-long, and equipped with benches rather than individual chairs. Bowls and platters moved easily from hand to hand, and every request was accompanied with a 'please' and 'thank you.' It was wild, but Jon wasn't sure he'd ever been this comfortable at a family meal.

He was about to dig in when conversation stopped and everyone stood. Confused, he rose as well, looking around. Lisa had offered grace already, in a strange flowing language that everyone else seemed to understand. Behind him, he heard the kitchen door closed, and turned to see a tall, dark-haired man, clearly another of Zan's family, from his appearance, and a younger, slightly shorter man, who seemed to be the focus of everyone's attention.

"Well, Your Grace. I seem to have wandered into the middle of a party."

Zan came forward, exchanging kisses with the younger man. "Welcome, Prince Marcus. What brings you to Bedlama?"

"Why, you of course." He waved to the people standing at attention. "I'm not here on a formal visit. Please, sit down. Relax." They did, enveloping the dark-haired man into their midst. "So how are you, Zan?"

"I'm just fine, thank you. Stay for dinner?"

"I'd love to."

He was quickly settled next to Jon. "Crown Prince Marcus Draconavar. Call me Marcus."

"Lieutenant Jon Quick. Jon. Good to meet you, sir."

"What brings you to Bedlama, Marcus?" Lisa asked as the meal resumed.

"My sister wants to know how the duchess is faring, and the future earl or countess. So she asked me to come, unofficially."

"She could have written," Zan pointed out.

"True, but if she had, I'd be back home flying more recruits in circles," the other new arrival said from where he sat, across from Jon. "Hi. David RunningHorse."

Jon nodded. "Jon Quick. You fly?"

"David's the lead officer on our new experimental piloting program," the prince said. "I thought he might like to say hello to his family."

"Adry didn't come?" Lisa asked.

"Ah, fair lady, there are only so many rules even I can bend," Marcus said. "Sorry."

"Besides, Mom, someone has to feed those poor souls you left at home," David pointed out.

"That's a rather casual attitude to take about your own wife, David." Lisa was frowning

He grinned wolfishly. "I have leave next week. I'll make it up to her."

Lisa traded looks with Zan. "You know what that means."

"Better set up tents in the yard, if we plan to house all of them," Zan agreed.

"What are they talking about?" Jon asked the prince.

"It's something in the nature of a family joke. Captain RunningHorse and his wife are frequently separated by his work. They find ways to make it up, usually at the expense of everyone's hearing."

"I'm almost sorry I asked," Jon whispered.

"Don't be. Be sorry if you ever have to hear it," Marcus whispered back.

Jon snorted, then picked up his fork and resumed eating.

As the Hearts experienced the controlled chaos which was their life, the House of Ataka was putting their own type of chaos in motion for their enemies. After a month of seclusion together, Prince Goki and Lady Mylahn were allowed to be seen by Dr. Yowstis. Within the hour the happy announcement was made. Prince Goki and his betrothed had been successful in their duty to their people. The avatar had been conceived.

~Excellent. Nothing will stop the Avatar once He is born.~ Mylahn said. ~Doctor, could you excuse us?~

~Of course, Lady Erun.~ Once Yowstis left, Mylahn nodded for Goki to sit next to her.

~We did it.~ Goki said. ~Our duty has been fulfilled.~

~For now.~ Mylahn replied.

~What do you mean? We have conceived the Avatar.~

~Yes, we did. But it takes a lot more than mere conception to bring about the Avatar. He may have Wensitu's soul, but at birth He will be only a newborn, and He must be treated as such.~

~You are not considering raising this together, are you?!~

~On the contrary, Prince Goki, I am. The Master's physical form will we weak. It is up to us to protect Him and raise Him so that he may grow strong.~

~I will not do such a thing! I have fulfilled my duty to my people!~

~This is only the beginning. Much has to be done before the Avatar assumes full power. Or have your emotions clouded your mind?~

~You and your El Undars can raise it. I will have no part of it.~ As Goki began to leave, he felt a strong force hold him back. He turned to see Mylahn, smirking and glaring.

~My powers will not be surpressed for another month, dear Prince, so I suggest you listen clearly.~

~I don't care what you do to me! I will not raise that child!~

~I was hoping you would say that. Every child, of cam and el, needs both parents to survive. The Avatar is no exception.~

~And if I refuse?~

~Then your precious helper will have a most unfortunate accident.~ Goki could only stare at her. ~Did you think I wouldn't find out about your little secret? That you've been having an affair with one of your servants?~

~Most people seduce their servants. It is perfectly natural.~

~Servants of the same sex? I think not, my little victory. Homosexuality is a human custom, one that your Pahda uses in his prostitution ring. That is acceptable. Your little love life, on the other hand, is not. I'd hate to inform Lady Birilla--or anyone else--that the Avatar's sire has been influenced by the enemy...~

~You wouldn't!~

~Oh, but I would, unless you comply with my demands.~

~This is blackmail!~

~Figuring secrets out is what I do best, dear Prince. That is why my parents gave me the name Mylahn. Wua for puzzle.~

~If you knew about my secret, then why haven't you told anyone?~

~I thought about it, and I wouldn't want us to resort to our back-up plan just because you were taken in by human influence. Now, aid in raising this child or your lover will suffer for your insolence.~

~All right. I will do what you say.~

~I knew you'd see it my way.~ Goki just glared at her, then felt the force that held him dissapate. ~Do not worry about your little pet; I've been meaning to have a new toy.~ Goki just stormed out as Mylahn smiled to herself. ^I didn't want this pansy to be the sire for the Avatar.^ she thought. *But it was either him or the spawn of those traitors. The former will do much nicely, for now.*

As promised, Goki returned to his own personal chambers to meet with Curat. His servant had prepared for the Prince’s return, making sure everything was just right, perfectly in line with his master’s desires and preferences. He greeted Goki with a smile and a bow.

~Welcome back, your Highness! Is everything to your liking?~

Goki ignored all the work his servant had done and walked straight up to Curat, looking him up and down. He then leaned forward to kiss his companion, then stroke his cheek with his thumb.

~Yes, my dear. Everything is to my liking,~ Goki replied as he wrapped his arm about Curat’s waist, gently leading him to his bed.

~I heard the great news about the conception. You were right when you told me it wouldn’t take very long.~

~Of course I was right.~ As Goki leaned back on his pillow, Curat laid his head on his master’s chest. Goki’s heartbeat pounded against his ear. He felt Goki’s chest rise and fall as he let out a deep sigh.

~Is something the matter, my Lord?~

~No, Curat, everything is fine. Do not worry.~

Goki turned over on his side and drew his companion closer to him, placing light kisses on his face. As he held him in an embrace, anger rose up in him over Mylahn threats. He wasn't going to let Mylahn get away with blackmail. He was going to make sure she regretted it.

Meanwhile, Mylahn rested in her own chambers, looking into a huge, full-length mirror. Unfortunately to anyone who has earned her wrath or similar, the mirror was enchanted to allow the owner to see what or whoever she wished. Right now, Mylahn used it to spy on Goki and Curat. ^Foolish little royal.^ she said to herself. ^If you think you can defy me and get away with it, you're wrong. But I won't punish you for your thoughts. No, I'll wait until you take your pitiful attempt, and then I will hurt you so bad that you will wish you were dead.^ Mylahn stood up and walked to the center of the room, lighting a candle that she placed there earlier. The candle was yellow, with a purple broken heart on it. She then recited an incantation.

Freezer of blood, chiller of bones,
The terror you spread speaks many tones.
Vengeance, grief, discord and strife,
All I that I seek, to curse my foe's life.
At service thou art, for man or maid,
I summon the Fear Bringer to my aid.

A flash of light suddenly erupted and when it died down, a silver red-headed woman was in the place of the candle. She was of Mykari heritage, her skull gem matching the emblem on the candle. She looked at Mylahn with indigo eyes and made a low bow.

"Lady Mylahn Erun! To what do I owe the pleasure of these summons?"

"I have a job for you." Mylahn stated in perfect English.

"It must be very important for you to summon me where all of your leaders are, especially your mentor. She will not be pleased with our...business arrangement should she find out."

"I fail to see why. You may have the same Element as the Child of Light, but that is no big deal. If Lady Birilla wants to use treacherous spawn as a back-up sire for the Avatar, I fail to see why she would object to me hiring the legendary Ta'Ran-Shan for my personal business."

"Speaking of the Avatar, how is the little bundle?"

"Quite well, thank you. That's why I summoned you."

"Oooh, sire being a no-good bum?"

"Worse. He's a miserable little powderpuff who thinks he can get away with anything!"

"He's planning to double-cross you?"

"Not yet. Just in case, I want you to keep an eye on his little helper. If Prince Goki makes any action towards me..."

"I kill his boy toy?"

"No, Ta'Ran-Shan. I have bigger plans for him. Simply abduct him and stash him away, but I want him alive. Is that clear?"

"Yessa!"

"Good. Your usual fee." Mylahn presented Ta'Ran-Shan with a chest of gold trinkets. "Expect monthy payments until the Avatar comes of full power."

"Ooh, you got it! And I see you remember my discount."

"50% off payment if I perform the torture myself. Who wouldn't forget that?"

"Heeeheheeehehhehee!!! This is going to be a lot of fun!!! I see plenty of negative emotions coming from Goki in the near future! Until next time, dear Lady!" With that, Ta'Ran-Shan disappeared into a flash of light. Mylahn took down the mystic barrier that she put up earlier and gazed into her magic mirror.

*Too bad I can't use it to spy on the enemy.* she thought. *Curse you, Vasah!"

Meanwhile, another betrothed couple was also coming out of seclusion. Valentino Meglouse and Keisha Xeratro parted ways briefly to prepare for their wedding day. It was rumored that is would be quite a spectacle. The ceremony would be quite unique for both families since the entire ceremony would be in sign. As Tino prepared himself at his house, his father gave him some advice about the wedding.

[Now you may not feel nervous now, but it’s very likely that you’ll experience some jitters. Just don’t panic and you’ll be fine,] the Copper Kidd signed to his son.

It wasn't long before the time came for the ceremony. As the heralds rang their bells, the blessed couple arrived, escorting each other. Tino was wearing an all-white tuxedo, while Keisha was wearing a harem pants with a tank top, cloak and inta flower tiara. They, too, were white. Both garments were enchanted to change color from white to red upon the sealing of matrimony. As they got to the altar, all three holy officials--one Mimian Holy Elder, Papa Toussant and a Mykari High Priestess--said their respective marital prayers in both their native language and in sign. Keisha and Tino even signed their vows. The instant the holy ones announced them as entawans, husband and wife, and eternal mates, the newly wedded couple kissed, causing their garments to turn to red. They went on their way to the reception shortly after, featuring several traditional Mykari wedding dishes and some chocolate bars snuck in.

Zan rubbed away the back spasm absently. They had been plaguing her recently, though they hadn't seemed to be going anywhere. She caught sight of Lisa watching her from where Will was introducing her to everyone, and smiled sarcastically, waggling her fingers in a wave. Lisa raised an eyebrow, then turned back to Detia, offering to hold her squirmy daughter. Kyla went eagerly to her new friend, seemingly fascinated with Lisa's long thick braid.

Zan turned away, eyeing the huge buffet table and its host of fascinating offerings. There was a vast array of MyKari dishes, but in consideration of the wide range of tastes among the guests, everything had been discreetly labeled as to main ingredients, and suitability of palate. Ever adventurous, Zan had promised herself a taste of everything. Heaving herself up from the chair, she slowly crossed the room and picked up a plate.

Lisa watched her foster daughter out of the corner of her eye. She loved all of her children fiercely, but this one girl, a dying gift from her dearest friend, had been her greatest trial at times. It warmed her heart to see Zannatasia so happy; in love, married, settled. It was a double blessing when they had believed for so long that she was lost to them forever.

The warmth she felt for her foster child quickly started to reach nuclear heat when she saw Zan pile onto her plate what looked like a large helping of Jamaican jerk chicken. Quickly she handed Kyla back to her mother, slipping through the crowd and disarming Zan of her plate and fork before her daughter could have so much as a bite.

"Liii-saaa," Zan whined, eyes fastened on the heaping plate of delicacies.

"I said no, Zannatasia Izzabella. No spicy foods. You may have a small slice of wedding cake, but the heartburn and indigestion from this would keep you up all night." Lisa helped herself to a forkful of the chicken. "Mmmm. Wonderful. I should get the recipe."

"I'm up all night as it is," Zan complained. "I can't stay in any one position for more than 5 minutes, I get kicked in organs I didn't know I had..." She paused to take a breath, gritting her teeth as the pain in her back worsened. Across the room, Emily's head popped up, followed swiftly by Will's. "If I'm going to pay the price, at least let me commit the crime first." In her head, Emily was jabbering something at Will, though she didn't try to hear what they were discussing. They deserved their privacy like anyone else.

"I did suggest, Zan, that you skip the reception," Lisa reminded her. "I knew the temptation for you would be great..." She trailed off as Zan winced and reached around to support her back again. "Zan...?"

Will was beside them in an instant, followed quickly by Emily. He quickly threw an arm around his wife and started leading her toward the exit. "We'd better get her out of here," he said quietly.

"It is time?" Lisa asked, trying to see her daughter through the eyes of a mid-wife rather than a concerned parent.

"Emily thinks so, and I've learned not to question. Come on, Zan. We'll get you to the hospital in no-"

"No hospital," she said firmly.

He started to protest. "Zan.." but saw the determined look on her face, and Lisa's as well. "Okay. No hospital. Do you want to go home?"

Zan nodded sharply, teeth grinding together to keep from crying out. "Yes," Lisa said. "I have everything I need there," She slid under Zan's other shoulder, taking some of her daughter's weight.

"Em, you should stay here," Will said as she started to follow them. "I'll keep in touch and you can tell people as much as you think they need to know. But this is Leo's family's party, and you should be here with them."

She nodded quickly. "I'll be over as soon as things wrap up here. Good luck."

Will nodded, and soon they disappeared out one of the side doors.

Ke’Rika and her aunt Kyla didn’t care that the celebration wasn’t about them. The made sure that they were the centers of attention. They had conspired to get as much chocolate into, and onto, themselves as possible. Their pretty, frilly dresses were soon smeared with the sweet, Terran confection. Their respective mothers were not pleased at all.

{I’m so glad we brought them extra dresses in case something like this happened,} Detia sighed as she changed her daughter’s clothes.

{I’ll say. Now all we have to do is keep them by our sides. Or better yet, maybe we should put them in Sh’Ekrah’s care…}

The two toddlers didn’t like the sound of that. The Brigadier wouldn’t let them get away with anything, and he had a strong grip that was nearly impossible to squirm from. Just the mention of Sh’Ekrah’s name seemed to cause the two little ones to calm down.

Detia had finally noticed that Zan and Will had left early. She grabbed up Kyla and went to ask Emily if everything was alright.

"Hey, schnooks," Emily said brightly, taking the toddler. "You're a mess."

"Did Zan and Will leave?" Detia asked, swiping a napkin at the sticky mess on her daughter's face.

Emily nodded, shifting the baby to her hip. "Don't spread it around, but they left in a hurry with Lisa. Looks like things are coming to a head, but Zan won't want everyone fussing over her. I'm going to check on her later."

Detia nodded. "Okay. No one heard it from me. Come here, Miss Thang. You're gonna get Aunt Emily all sticky."

"With any luck, she'll be my sister-in-law one of these days."

"You giving me a hint about something, girlfriend?"

Emily offered a coy smile. "Not yet. But I think we'll get there eventually."

"Well, good luck to both of you."

"Thanks. I'll need it."

Meanwhile...Zan was undergoing (insert sarcasm here) the pleasures of labor.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAMN YOU, WILL!! THIS KID'S GOT YOUR BODY MASS!!! AUGH!!!!!!!!!!! REMIND ME TO KILL YOU WHEN THIS IS OVER!!!!!!!!!" she screamed.

"Okay..." Will thought as he underwent his wife's yells. "Whoever thought of that has got to win the pool on weight."

Outside the house, the entire RunningHorse clan was gathered in the yard. A fire burned inside a carefully prepared stone ring, and various family members were taking turns chanting and beating on traditional drums. Children flocked here and there, easily scooped out of harm's way by an aunt or uncle and sent running the other way with a pat on the bottom.

The Labor went on for hours, Zan walking the upper halls of the house, alternately hanging onto Will and shoving him away, and though he was worried, he never let himself take her shouting or swearing personally.

Night fell, and the stars turned overhead when Zan finally climbed back into bed, ready to push. Outside in the dark, the chanting dropped into a low rhythmic beat, and Will sat behind Zan, helping to hold her up as Lisa directed matters from the foot of the bed.

"Come on, sweetie," she said encouragingly. "Just a couple more pushes..."

Zan grit her teeth and squeezed down hard on Will's hand. With a shove and a long groan, she pushed her child, a daughter, into the world.

"It's a girl!" Emily announced to the long-waiting crowd. "8 and a half pounds, 19 3/4 inches. Mother and baby are doing fine."

Zan lay back against Will as Lisa took care of cleaning the baby girl up. She was exhausted from the labor, but at the same time, felt like she was floating on cloud 9.

"You did it Wolfie." Will said as he wrapped his arms about her. Softly kissing her on the cheek. He had felt ever moment of it, though not as strongly as his sister did.

"no, We did it. It takes two, Teddy Bear." Zan replied, rubbing her hand up and down his arm.

"Got an idea for a Name, don't ya?"

"Yeah."

"Well then Daughter mine, Let's hear it." Lisa said as she brought the child over. She was wrapped in traditional swaddling cloths.

"Eve....." a pause then a smile as Zan took her daughter in her arms. "Eve Adadoligi Heart."

Lisa just chuckled and shook her head. "It fits."

Later when things had quieted down, Will decided to ask a question that had been nagging him all night long. "Why here? why not at the Hospital?"

"She was conceived in this bed, and I wanted her born in this bed!" Zan said.

Will just chuckled, shaking his head a few times before he reached over and gently stroked the downy crown of his daughters head.

The newest member of the RunningHorse clan had finally arrived. There would be much to celebrate for this particular child should not have been able to exist had it not been for the intervention of a certain Omnimorph. Zan found the time in her busy schedule to quietly and secretly thank Moeba for her totally unexpected blessing. SteelWill was definitely pleased with the results. Meanwhile, the MATI awaited the arrival of their precious Avatar. He or she seems to be quite healthy and vigorous, which was obvious to Mylahn by the activity in her womb. She often spoke to her unborn child, speaking of his or her purpose and how all the MATI looked forward to the destruction of the Child of Light.

^But we can't destroy her yet, my dear.^ Mylahn whispered. ^Lady Birilla says if the Child of Light dies too soon, her entawan will take her power and doom us all. He's a very powerful warrior from what I've heard. But don't worry. We'll succeed, very soon.^ She continued to look into the book she was reading. *See this book? It tells how to make you stronger very quickly. All we need right after you're born is your sire and SirLs Jobas. After that, all shall belong to Wenbaran.*

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ke'Rika was now a little more than one year, but one would think she was older because of her extensive vocabulary. Like any toddler, she was eager to explore the world around her. She was busy exploring baby Eve’s head during a brief visit by her god mother, Phantom.

“I see the baby, Zanna!” Ke’Ri squealed as she gently patted Zan’s baby girl’s head.

“Well, I see two babies. Eve, and Ke’Ri. One, two.” Zan pointed to her child then to Ke’Ri.

“I not a baby! I’m a big girl!” The toddler stretched her arms wide for emphasis.

“Yes, that you are,” Zan chuckled as she rocked little Eve in her arms. Moments later, Ke’Rika had a little brainstorm. She couldn’t wait to let Mahda and Papa know all about it.

“Mahda, Papa, can you get me a baby?”

"A baby?" her Papa asked.

"Uh-huh. I wanna baby to play with all day!"

"Ke'Ri, I'm not sure. Babies can be very delicate. You have to be very careful around them."

"I know. So can I have a baby?"

"We'll see, Ke'Ri. We'll see...I can just picture you with a nice little brother..."

"No!"

"No?"

"I don't wanna brother; I wanna sister!"

"But what about Kyla? She's like a sister to you, isn't she?"

"Yes, but Kyla's really Mahda's sister! I want my own sister!"

Sh’Ekrah looked at his mate to see what she had to say.

“Sh’Ekrah, I haven’t gotten rid of all the weight from the first pregnancy! I think we should hold off on having another baby for a couple years.”

“How many would you suggest, love?”

“Oh…about ten or twelve.”

Zan overheard Camiel’s comment, which made her laugh out loud, which startled little Eve, who bagan to holler.

"Uh oh..." said Ke'Rika. "Zanna woke the baby." All three of them got to Zan, who was trying to calm her little girl down.

Zan shifted so that she was slumped in her seat, then shifted Eve until the crying infant's head was tucked under her chin. Zan began a wordless crooning hum that was felt as much as heard. Still Eve cried.

Sighing Zan shifted her again, checking the diaper first. "Nope, that's not the problem." she said. "Anyone seen her binkie?"

"Binkie? what's that?"

"Her pacifier." Zan chuckled. "Though at one time a blanket was referred to as a binkie." Once it was located, she tried getting Eve to accept it. She did, for a moment, before making such a face and started to cry again.

Zan just shook her head. "Mind if I use your room for a few? She's apparently hungry. It was near feeding time at any rate. I just woke her up early. And I forgot to grab an extra bottle for her."

"Yeah, sure." Cami said pointing in the direction of her and her mate's bedroom.

"Thanks." Zan replied getting up and heading that direction. She was from the old school of raising children. Which meant none of the disposable garbage for diapers, and none of the pre-made formulas. Strictly cloth diapers & breast feeding.

Among the MATI, similar child rearing techniques were being used for the unborn Avatar. Mylahn had just been napping when she sensed a presence. She looked up from her bed and saw a little niku sitting at the foot. She had to give a smile when she saw that.

~Hello, Trrilara. So glad you could join us here in Limbo.~ In an instant, the niku changed shape. Soon, it grew into a Tch brunette with violet eyes and dark green colorings. ~Did you find them?~

~No,~ the shape changer said. ~I have looked everywhere, Wensitu help me, but I couldn't find those SirLs Jobas. You know they aren't easy to get.~

~Yes, all too well.~

~Mylahn, are you sure you want to do this spell? Once you give birth, you'll be in no condition to even cast a curse, let alone a ritual spell to quickly grow the Avatar.~

~We have no choice, Trrilara. The Child of Light is getting stronger and if we kill her, our situation will be worse than usual.~

~Even if you are able to conjure this spell, it's still a great risk.~

~How so? I doubt the sacrifice of the Avatar's sire would turn a few heads.~

~He's of a respective house.~

~Which is weak! We must eliminate the weak in our group to rise above the fools who follow our Lord's enemy!~

~I know, but we can't harm Lady Pijol! She may be Lord Tkkla's pitawan, but she is also the widow of the late Prince Tilor.~

~Wensitu bless him. I understand that, Trrilara. Also, if you're worried about Lady Tifa, don't. She will be spared due to her marriage into the Tangert house.~

~I'm glad. Now, onto the current problem. How are we going to get SirLs Jobas before the Avatar has to come out?~

~I don't know.~ Trrilara started pacing.

~Wait a second! What about Lady Birilla's private collection? The one you told me about?~

~You mean the one with the stolen skull gems of murdered Mimian-Mykari hybrids that she would have Mistress Zantara get sometimes?~

~Yes!~

~I already looked through those. Earth, Ice, Sound, Lightning, Metal, Mind, and Heart are the only Elements I saw. No Water, no Wind, no Shadow, no Light and defintely no Fire.~

~Oh no...~

~Then again...Trrilara, get a mystic barrier up! I got an idea.~

~What?~

~You'll see.~ Trrilara got a barrier up just as Mylahn used the summoning candle to get Ta'Ran-Shan. Trrilara's eyes bugged out at the sight of the recently appeared Mykari.

~Mylahn, have you gone mad!? Summoning this Mykari mercenary here?!~

~I know we haven't trusted the Mykari since the Hav'Throth betrayed us, but Ta'Ran-Shan is the best there is.~

~Even so, did you have to get her?! Every living being in the universe knows she is a lunatic!~

~She also has deep knowledge about what the Mykari consider Forbbiden Arts. We need her.~

"Uh, excuse me ladies!" Ta'Ran-Shan called. "Did you summon me for a purpose, or just a girl chat?"

"I need your expertise, Ta'Ran-Shan." Mylahn explained.

"Name it, doll!"

"Among the Mykari Forbidden Arts, there is a spell to devolve skull gems with the Evolved Elements into their basic form."

"Oooh...you're talking about an Element Devolution Spell. Very strong magic, my Lady, and difficult to cast. I doubt you'll be able to do such a thing."

"Just tell me what is needed and done and I'll take it from here."

"No, no...can't leave it in your hands, not in your condition. I better do this little errand. What do need devolved?"

"Lady Birilla used to hire Lenaria Zantara for personal business ever since she spoke the human tongue. Zantara mudered the Mimian-Mykari halflings for her, but also took their skull gems for Birilla's collection."

"So?"

"So of all the skull gems in her collection, Lady Birilla only has seven of the twelve Elements."

"And you need me to Devlove one of them."

"Exactly. We're hoping skull gems with a Fire Element will be a substitute for the SirLs Jobas I need for the Avatar's ascent to power."

"I see. Just one thing; what's a SirLs Jobas?"

"They're a type of spirit stone, a mystical artifact local to my people. Some are more rare than others. The stones I need require a strong fire Element. Trrilara will try to gather the skull gems that have the Lightning Element. I need you to prepare for the spell to devolve them from Lightning to Fire."

~What?!~ Trrilara cried.

~You have the best chance to get those gems without being detected.~

~Mylahn, in case you've forgotten, my shape shifting powers can only do so much.~

~I know. Plus, I need you to do the spell for me to ascend the Avatar when the time comes. You said so yourself I'll be in no condition to cast the spell. After all, you're like a sister to me and I trust you.~

~And what do we tell Lady Birilla about all of this?~

~Absolutely nothing, to anyone.~

~This is madness.~

~This is the only way Wensitu will prevail against all who would defy him. Just keep quiet about all of this and we'll prevail.~ Mylahn then turned to Ta'Ran-Shan. "Be back here within five days and the gems will be ready for you."

"Got it, maestro!" With that, a flash of light enveloped Ta'Ran-Shan and she was gone.

~Mylahn, I certainly hope you know what you're doing.~ Trrilara commented.

~I do, old friend. I most certainly do.~

Meanwhile, Prince Goki was in another part of the MATI base talking with his assistant.

~I tell you, I don’t trust her, Curat.~

~Who, my Lord?~

~That wench Mylahn Erun. We were doing so well until she got on my bad side. I don’t take kindly to threats.~

~She threatened you, sire?~

~Isn’t that what I just said?~

The blond Tch man got up and began to pace the floor.

~Sire, is there something you would like me to do? Inform Lord Ataka?~

~No. What I want you to do, dear Curat, is keep your eyes and ears open. If anything were to happen to me, that bitch will try to make it look like an accident. Know that it will be no accident. Once that comes out, Lady Erun will be on the hit list of both the House of Ataka and the House of Ritua. She will regret her betrayal.~

~Isn’t there some way to protect your life?~

~I have someone watching both of us twenty four seven. Even so, she could still manage to cause me harm. If that happens, you know what to do, my dear. Do you understand what I’m saying to you?~

~Yes, my Lord.~

~Good. Now that that is settled, I’d say it’s time for our mid-day meal.~

As they headed for the dining room, Goki lightly brushed his hand against his lover's and gave him a reassuring smile.

The House of Ataka and guests soon gathered for their mid-day meal. Normally, most of the conversations that took place at that time would revolve around latest plans or complaints, but today, it seemed like a storm was going to rage, particularly between Tkkla's firstborn and pitawan.

Lady Pijol's excitement over the impending arrival of the Avatar was apparent. Ever since the announcement of the sucessful conception, she had been talkinga bout it non-stop, stating how proud she was that Wensitu had chosen her bloodline to be the gateway for the Master to return to the physical plane. Tifa was not so happy about the situation. She loved her half-brother, Prince Goki, but could care less for her pahda's loudmouth pitawan. As Pijol dominated the mid-day mean conversation, Tifa became more and more irritated.

Why did Wensitu choose the spawn of that wanna-be MATI? He should have chosen Binah. My daughter would have been the perfect candidate for she is a true royal! I wish that bitch would shut up and eat!

It wasn't long before Tifa finally had enough of Pijol's bickering.

~FOR THE LOVE OF WENSITU, SHUT UP!!! WE KNOW HOW EXCITED YOU ARE ABOUT THE WHOLE THING ALREADY, SO GIVE IT A REST!~

~Tifa!~ Fikkia scolded. ~Don't raise your voice like that! It isn't lady-like.~

~And this...worthless commoner going on and on, never stopping to take a breath, is acting lady-like?~

~How dare you!~ Pijol snapped. ~You have some nerve to insult me!~

~Because you're my Pahda's pitawan? Ha! Some pitawan you are! My Pahda would never even consider spending the rest of his life by your side if it weren't for the promise he made to Prince Tilor!~

~That's not true!~

~Oh it is true, Pijol. You may have the status of pitawan in this household, but in reality, you're no better than a mere concubine. He only married you to legitimize Goki, and for that I am grateful for his sake. So do us all a favor and stop acting like you're one of us! Despite your marriages into royalty, you have been, and always will be, a pathetic, slutty, worth-less-than-dirt commoner!~

Everyone at the table sat in stunned shock as they waited for Pijol to respond. Her face showed a mixture of anger, disappointment, and hurt. After a few moments of silence, Pijol got up from the table and left the dining room.

~That’s right, Piggy! Get out of here because you don’t belong!~

Lord Tkkla shot his daughter an angry look, then followed Pijol to try and comfort her.

Birilla was, obviously, upset with Tifa and gave her a telekinetic slap on the face. ~You insolent girl!~ she snapped. ~You have some nerve talking to her like that! Pijol belongs here just like all of the Followers of Wensitu, and she especially belongs here more than you!~

~Oh really?~ Tifa replied. ~How is a commoner more worthy than me, a Princess?~

~You, dear Tifa, act in a prejudicial manner to the mixed ones because that is how you were raised. You hate them because you were told and taught by your parents, friends and family to hate them. Pijol's hatred of them, however, is pure. She needed no counsel, no guidance to establish her hatred. I've sensed this hatred from the start and it has grown stronger with each passing day. Commoner, artisan, aristocrat or royal, it does not matter. She is a true Follower of Wensitu; my son chose his life mate well. Now out of my sight, you spoiled brat, before I unleash my wrath!~

In the meantime, Lord Tkkla was trying to comfort his pitawan in another room. It was obvious that she was very upset by what Tifa had said. He wanted to make sure she took none of this to heart.

~Is it true, Tkkla? Those things she said?~

~Of course not, my dear. Fikkia and I accepted you as a pitawan because we both love you and Goki. We wanted to make sure you got everything you deserve because you’ve done so much for our family. Tifa is just being an ungrateful, jealous snob.~

~Tifa is jealous of me?~

~Yes, ever since you became my pitawan, she’s felt like her status in the House of Ataka has been taken from her.~

~Oh really? I never knew.~

~No matter. I’ll have a talk with her later. In the meantime, we must continue to prepare for the arrival of the Avatar. I’ve been discussing the importance of his role as the Avatar’s sire with Goki. For some reason, he seems distracted. I’m thinking he might be having problems with his mate.~

~I’m sure everything will be all right.~

Neither one of them had any idea of the trouble brewing between that couple. However, Empress Birilla was beginning to sense something sinister about her apprentice. After the mid-day meal she took Mylahn aside to discuss it with her.

~You wanted to speak with me, Your Grace?~

~Yes, Mylahn. I need to ask you…how are you getting along with your mate?~

~Fairly well.~

~Are you sure?~

~Yes, why do you ask?~

~I just get the feeling you two aren’t getting along as you should. And I’m hoping that whatever issues you’re facing can be resolved soon because in a short our Master will join us in the physical world. Goki has an important purpose in all this as well as you. Wensitu has a plan for all of us so we must be in one accord for his plan to work.~

~Of course, Lady Birilla. All will be well.~

~Excellent. Now why don't you rest? Wensitu knows this has been a rough day.~

~As you wish.~ Mylahn immediately headed for her chambers, where she saw Trrilara waiting for her. ~Did you get them?~ Mylahn asked her friend.

~Yes, I did.~ Trrilara explained. ~Ta'Ran-Shan is devolving the skull gems as we speak.~

~Excellent. Nothing will stop us from ascending the Avatar. Then all shall fall and rise from the ashes in our master's name.~

Meanwhile, Tifa had locked herself in her chambers for a peaceful sleep. However, her sleep was anything but as she soon found herself in a strange sort of realm.

"Greetings, Lady Tifa Tangert." a smooth voice said. "My, you are as your name says...charming."

Tifa turned around at the voice and noticed it was a tall creature with wily fur. "Mon*Star!" she cried. "What the hell is this?!"

"You must be mistaken, dear lady. I am not the mortal who calls himself Mon*Star." the creature said. Tifa took a closer look; the face was smoother, there was no eye patch and the fur was much brighter.

"You're right." she concluded. "Who are you, then?"

"The outsiders of this galaxy call me the Limbo Devil. The natives, on the other hand, know me as Delvao, the god of power and divine leader of the Feltorue species."

"Oh, like how some outsiders call our god Wenbaran, the bringer of destruction."

"Exactly. I noticed you're having some trouble, Lady Tangert. It seems the posession of two wives doesn't appeal to you at this point."

"Oh, I'm fine with my Pahda choosing a pitawan. It's who he chose that bothers me. He's too good for that commoner!"

"But no one agrees with you. Your highest priestess even turns against you when you speak bad of the woman."

"They're just blinded by her so called brilliance. Just because she was able to sucessfully plan and carry out a few hits, they put her on a pedistal."

"Pure luck, I say. But what really miffs you is that she took some power away from you. Isn't that right, Lady Tifa?"

Tifa gives him a slack jawed look. "Why yes, you could say I'm a little pissed about that. Ever since I was born I was the second most powerful female in the House of Ataka...then she came along."

"Very understandable. How would you like to regain that lost power? I can help you with that. I specialize in power struggles such as yours."

"You can't be serious..."

"Oh, I am, and from your case, it's rather simple. We just kill the bitch, then everything will be back to normal."

"You know you're right. The only way that could be done is if the bitch dies. But you know if I killed her everyone would immediately start looking at me."

"I'm sure I could arrange some sort of disease to strike her, or even a freak accident. However, my offers aren't just made out of good will, you know. Everything has its price."

Tifa sighed. "I knew there had to be a catch...so what is it?"

"I don't ask for much, my dear. But, like yourself and your bretheren, I, too have enemies. The other gods of this galaxy don't take kind to my ways. One of them especially is called Thal'Rahi, the Divine Champion. He is the god of justice and leads the mortals known as the Spiritual Warriors, better known to you as the Hash'a'Glith."

"Oh, those nasty talking squids? The ones who don't mind mixing with mongrels? I'd be happy to be of service."

"Interspecies unions have been quite common since the War of Eternity ended." Delvao explained. "Such a shame, really; purtiy holds so much potential. Ah, anyway, as I've been saying, Thal'Rahi and I been adversaries for eons. He has many followers at his disposal that could easily threaten my power. His greatest and strongest one was a powerful warrior-priest called Ka'Raki (holy guardian) Brightlight. I'm sure you're familiar with that surname."

"Oh yes. Quite familiar," Tifa sneered.

"Ten thousand years dead and his spirit still interferes. He serves as a spirit guide to the soul mate of his descendant, Sh'Ekrah the Fearless Rebel. Unfortunately, that poor sap is everything like his ancestor, including the hidden power within. Fortunately, it hasn't been unlocked, but it has been combined with the shadow power within his child."

"You mean that your enemy is aiding the Child of Light and her creepy hybrid child?"

"These Hash'a'Glith are very clingy to their blood, as you can see. And so, here is my price; I will obliterate your pitiful step-mother and thus give you the power taken from you, but only after you have completely wiped out the Brightlight blood. Not even a drop should exist."

"Hmmm...that's sounds like quite a challenge. And how do you suggest I do this?"

"Plunge your body into my heart, currently known as the Moonstar. Only then will you have the strength to destroy them all."

Tifa's eyes widen with surprise. "Are you insane? Won't that energy destroy me?"

"Not at all. If you concentrate on your darkest impulses as you enter the Moonstar, you will rise with power beyond your imagination."

"I don't know...I don't want to put myself at unnecessary risk. I have a mate and daughter to think about. Can you gaurantee my suvrival?"

"Of course, my dear. We're both...mutally dependant on each other in our goals."

"Well...you're going to have to let me give it some thought. It's not something to be taken lightly. Though it would be so nice to never have to hear Piggy squeal ever again...oh the hell with it! I'll do it!"

"Perfect! Just sign this contract in your blood and the deal shall be official." Delvao uses the knife used in the sacrifice cermonies to make a cut in Tifa's wrist and places the wound over a piece of paper, allowing three drops of blood to spill on it and shaping into Tifa's signature. As soon as the contract is singed, Tifa wakes up.

"My, that was a very interesting dream..." Tifa mumbled. Then she noticed her wrist was cut. "Or was it?"

Back on Bedlama, little Ke'Rika was spending a fun filled weekend with her paternal grandparents. The Brightlights were absolutely thrilled to finally have a grandchild after waiting three hundred years for their son to finally find a mate. The little one definitely kept them busy all weekend. She was a very intelligent and curious child so they had to keep a close eye on her to keep her out of trouble. Aside from a couple spills and a scraped knee, everything went very well for all. Getting little Ke'Ri to go to bed was a bit of a challenge though. She would avoid her bed for as long as she could, and when she finally went to sleep she would wake up crying for her parents. Lady Kes and Ar'Gor tried their best to comfort their granddaughter, but nothing seemed to help.

When it came time for Ke'Ri to go home, she told her parents about the nightmares. Cami just gave her entawan a small glare. "I told you she's too young to sleep away!" she nagged.

"Easy, Cami!" her mate answered. "Ke'Ri, what kind of nightmares have you been getting?"

"Well...everytime I go to sleep, I keep seeing this monster coming to get me. It got wings like a bat, red skin all over and breathes fire all over. I got scared 'cause it look so real."

"Did you see that monster everytime you went to sleep?"

"No. He just started appearing when I was with Grandmother and Grandfather. I didn't tell them 'cause I didn't want them seeing the monster and get scared."

Ke'Rika's father dismissed her nightmares as a way of coping with being away from her parents for more than a day. However, Camiel saw them as something more. The following day, Cami sat down with her daughter and asked her to draw the monster she saw. She also asked the child if the creature said anything to her. Camiel listened to Ke'Rika carefully, knowing full well that dreams can have deep spiritual meaning and sometimes reveal the future.

Among the MATI, Mylahn had gotten her own plans ready to come to fruition. When it came time for her to give birth, she insisted that she be alone with Goki, General Xecko and Trrilara, a fellow apprentice whom Mylahn 'recently sent for'. Mylahn had told Xecko, who was a lover of hers, her plan to raise the Avatar. He was relucant, at first, to betray the Atakas, but Mylahn convinced him that it was for the best.

~The Ataka house is weak,~ she told him. ~You've seen the recent failures brought onto us. Not very good to the cause, is it? And we both know how...dedicated you are to the cause.~

~Of course, Lady Myla.~ Mylahn grinned at her mention of her old pet name.

~The Child of Shadows is but an infant. We must ascend the Avatar now, before her powers mature. Otherwise, everything we've worked for, everything we've sacrificed, will have been in vain.~

~I have missed you, I'll admit that. I still think it's a big risk, though. We could incur the wrath of Lady Birilla.~

~A risk worth taking, Akiko, after all we've been through. You were my first love, and I had to leave you to fulfill my duties. Oh, my serene mind blade, I have missed you as well. Now, once we're through with that pathetic bastard Goki, everything will be just right.~

~Yes...as you've said, he's a threat to the cause.~

~Exactly why I had you brought; I want you to raise the Avatar with me instead of...OH!!~

~Myla, what is it?~

~It's...time. Fetch Trrilara and Goki...hurry!~ Akiko fled off in search of the ones summoned by his lover. Mylahn started wobbling towards the altar. "Ta'Ran-Shan!" she called. "Ta'Ran-Shan! It's time! Get the skull gems ready!!! AH!!!!!!!!!"

"Okay, okay!!" the Mykari bellowed, stepping out into the light. "You don't have to shout! All is ready!! It's magic time!! Oooh, you don't look so good..."

"YOU THINK!!!!?!!"

"Okay, so this is what childbirth looks like..." At that moment, Trrilara and Goki came rushing in, Akiko behind them.

~What's going on?~ Goki asked. Then he saw Ta'Ran-Shan. ~Who is that woman?~

"Your worst nightmare, sweet cheeks!" Ta'Ran-Shan cackled. Goki suddenly saw himself restrained in chains. "Just sit tight and when your baby boy takes his first breath, you take your last."

~Mylahn, what is going on?!~ Trrilara was busy helping Mylahn through the birth.

~It's quite simple, Prince Ataka.~ Akiko explained. ~Lady Mylahn has found a way to make the Avatar grow up quickly, so his powers will mature in time to deal with the current threat. However, you provide the key ingredient to this whole thing.~

~And that is...~

~Your life.~

~You traitorous bastard! You'll all pay for this!~

~You're the traitor, Goki! Having been influenced by the humans, you should've been considered unworthy to be the sire. However, there were those less worthy than you to bear that title. My precious Mylahn has given up much to bring the Avatar into this world. But you'll be making that all worthwhile.~ It was at that moment, the Avatar was born. Mylahn slid from the altar as Trrilara cut the cord and placed the male newborn on it and covered him with white powder.

~Wensitu, hear our prayers.~ Trrilara chanted. ~We now prepare your mortal body for its ascendtion. To strengthen the mind, we offer the crushed bones of your greatest, fallen warrior, Tilor Ritua, son of your dedicated follower Birilla Ritua. Accept our offering and rejoice.~ The poweder was observed into the babe's body as Akiko brought out the fire skull gems.

~Wensitu, hear our prayers.~ he chanted. ~To strengthen the spirit, we offer you stones of strong fire. Though they come from foreign lands, we pray they are enough to satisfy your desires. Accept our offering and rejoice.~ The gems appeared to form a raging inferno, engulfing the infant and being absorbed right into his body. Mylahn, though still weak, got out a knife and headed towards Goki.

~Wensitu, hear our prayers.~ Mylahn chanted. ~To strengthen the body, we offer you the flesh of the sire. Let his body be sacrificed so that you may grow triumphant against your enemies. Accept our offering and rejoice.~ Mylahn then cut a slit in Goki's wrist and brought him to the Avatar, who drank the blood dry. Both bodies merged as the three renagades continued praying.

~Let the Avatar rise in the glory of Wensitu. Death to Vasah and all who follow him. The light shall be dimmed and the fire will burn. Wensitu, come, come! Accept the offering of this mortal body and take your place amongst your followers.~ The ritual was nearing completion when Curat barged in.

~NO!!!~ he yelled when he saw what was happening. Soon, the glowing stopped, and there stood on the altar was a male with red skin and bat-like wings. His eyes burned with fire and looked at the ones who summoned him.

~Chameleon, Puzzle, Serenity.~ the tall figure stated to each of the three. ~You have done well in summoning me.~

~Thank you, Lord Wensitu.~ Trrilara said. ~We live only to serve.~

~WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!~ Curat cried. ~PRINCE GOKI, NO!~

~Obliterate that pathetic excuse for a Mimian.~ Wensitu ordered. All three obeyed. Ta'Ran-Shan went at him, but Curat barely dodged her. He saw something blue fall out of her pocket. Curat grabbed that and tossed the blue object at the Avatar before Akiko stabbed him in the heart. Suddenly, the Avatar found himself being consumed in pain.

~NO!!~ Mylahn cried. "Ta'Ran-Shan, was that a skull gem you dropped?!"

"Uhh...maybe." she replied. "I might've saved some of the extra skull gems for myself."

"What Element was that skull gem!?"

"I think it was..." Minutes later, the Avatar was trapped in a block of ice. "Ice. Yes, definitely Ice. Though why one skull gem could do that to an Avatar, I have no idea."

"Oh no...even after ascending him, he's still very vulnerable to his counter-Element. You idiot!!! How could you bring that thing here?!"

"Look on the bright side, Mylahn! At least you got a cover story, 'cause your mentor is heading right for this room." Ta'Ran-Shan then disappeared as Mylahn pondered on what to do.

~Trrilara, get rid of this stuff quick!~ Mylahn cried. Trrilara caused the altar, skull gems everything having to do with the ceremony to magically disappeared and cleaned up any and all magical traces left. At that moment, Birilla appeared with all of the Atakas.

~Mylahn, what happened here?~ Birilla asked. ~Where's Goki?~ Mylahn, having suffered much drainage, fainted.

~Goki wanted us to win, so he demanded us to perform the Ascension Ritual.~ Trrilara explained. ~We tried to talk him out of it, but it was no use. He insisted his sacrifice was necessary to the cause, and the cause was more important than a family life. He threatened suicide if we didn't comply. He killed himself at the end of the ceremony, causing the Avatar to arise to his full, powerful form. However, Curat found out and betrayed us.~

~Betrayed us? Why?~

~Curat barged in on us just as the ritual was being completed. He said he'd kill the Avatar before allowing Goki's body to be consumed. Oh, Lady Birilla, Curat admitted he loved Goki, as a man would love a woman. He had stolen one of your Ice skull gems and threw it in the Avatar. The Master's physical form was still weak towards any Element opposite his own, and so he stands encased in ice, as you can see.~ Birilla's eyes went wide as she took this in.

~And the traitor?~ she inquired.

~General Xecko took care of him.~

~Good.~ Birilla turned towards Tkkla. ~How could you allow one of your own servants to be tainted by human influence?!~ she yelled.

~I...I didn't know.~ Tkkla answered. ~I swear, I didn't know!~

~No more excuses, Tkkla! Thanks to Curat, our mission has been jeopardized! By the time the Avatar melts through that ice, the Child of Shadows will have become a significant threat! Not to mention that He will not have the knowledge required to be sustained!!~

~Not true, Lady Birilla.~ Xecko spoke. ~Mylahn and I can place ourselves in hibernation so we may raise the Avatar in the spirit realm.~

~Are you sure, General Xecko? It is going to take at least two decades before the Avatar awakens.~

~Anything for the cause.~

~Very well. Prepare yourselves at once. Trrilara, make sure they are not disturbed.~

~As you wish, Lady Birilla.~ Trrilara replied.

~And as for you, Tkkla. I grow tired of your incompetence. You and your house will return to Tch Country and deal with our finances. Pijol and the Tangerts will remain here in Limbo, under my command. I'll be sure to more than make up for your past blunders.~

~But Lady Birilla,~

~Do I make myself clear?~

~Yes, Your Grace.~

~Excellent. You depart immediately.~

As the entire House of Ataka mourned the lose of their crown Prince, Tifa Tangert had become suspicious of her sister-in-law. She had noticed General Xecko’s 'convenient’ arrival right before her beloved brother’s death. She had heard rumors that the two of them had an unsealed kyven bond. Tifa kept her suspicions to herself, though. She had to gather more information before she would take any action. A few weeks after the funeral, Akiko met with a fully rested and recovered Mylahn in her quarters.

~Aki, it’s good to see you love.~

~It’s good to see you too, Myla. I’m so glad that you’ve recovered since the birth.~

~Yes. I’m feeling much better now. You look like there is something on your mind. What is it?~

~Well, I’ve been thinking about you my dear…~

~I know. You’ve been visiting me often in my dreams,~ Mylahn replied with a smile.

~Yes, that’s what I wanted to…discuss. Although I desired you very much before you left Hnn country, I had enough discipline not to touch you physically until after you had given birth to the Master, but now…~

~Oh, Akiko…you want to seal our bond forever!~

~Yes.~

~I've been hiding our bond for so long from Lady Birilla. You have no idea how glad I'll be knowing she can't manipulate it once it's sealed.~

~Yes. Wensitu has blessed us. After our bond is sealed, beloved, we must hibernate into the spirit realm to raise the Avatar.~

~I know. Trrilara told me what happened. Damn that fool! We were so close. So close.~

~Try not to think about it, Myla. Right now, let us focus on our future.~

~Of course.~

Without further delay, Akiko settled into bed with Mylahn. They could both feel each other's excitement and longing for one another. Yes, their bond was strong and deep, but still vulnerable. The impact of the sealing of their bond the moment they gave themselves to one another could be felt all over the MATI Base. Most people didn't understand what was happening. The El Undars felt and understood, especially lady Birilla.

{A spirit bond between her and Akiko Xecko.} Birilla thought. {Hmm...Perhaps that was the trouble between Mylahn and Goki; a reluctance to give passion. I can understand the situation; Akiko is old enough to be her japahda and true lovers don't take pitawans. Yet both were willing to delay the sealing of their bond until Mylahn could bring the Avatar to this world. Oh to marry one who loves you and is loyal to the cause. She has no idea how lucky she is.} Birilla made her way to her apprentice's chambers and knocked on the door. Mylahn answered it, dressed in a robe.

{Lady Birilla.} Mylahn said. {Is something the matter?}

{No, my child. I just came to inform you and Akiko that it's time for hibernation.} Mylahn looked surprised at that mention. {Yes, Mylahn, I know what happened here, as do all of the El Undars.}

{If I have offended them, my Lady...}

{Save your breath, child. The other El Undars know a kyven's been sealed, but no idea who the couple is. All, except myself, and as far as I'm concerned, Akiko is a worthy escort for you. He's loyal to the cause and understands its true purpose, unlike some people.}

{I understand.}

{I envy your jamahda, Mylahn. The way I've been training you and teaching you, it makes me wonder what could've happened had my own granddaughter not strayed. She's so much like her Pahda, and like her accursed japahda as well! I cursed Rutor's soul everyday since his death! I would've been able to take my precious Marana into the castle and raise her, but no! Rutor didn't want us to raise 'an ill-bred child' in his palace and I couldn't take her and Pijol away from Mua Country without risking exposure to the cause or our group! Instead, they lived among the mixed ones, Marana's hatred slipping away with the passage of time. Oh, Ginneda is a lucky woman to have a loyal person like you as her granddaughter. Ah, listen to me; an old woman rambling. Have yourselves clothed and come to the Avatar's chamber.} Mylahn and Akiko did as they were told and arrived at the chamber. They lied down around the Avatar as Birilla cast a spell over them, causing them to go into a deep sleep until the time for the Avatar's awakening came. And as they slept, Mylahn and Akiko will raise the Avatar in the confines of the spirit realm, making Him ready to face the quest that would soon come.
