Closure

It had been about two months since the divorce. Sean and I were getting
along great. We had grown pretty close in such a short time. Our relationship
was still on the border line between friendship and romance. Sean understood
that I wasn’t ready to rush into a new romance right after a divorce. I asked
him to give me at least six months to get myself together before starting
anything serious. I spent the first two months after the divorce doing for
myself. You know, going shopping, going to the spa, hanging out with Octavia
at The Basement, and spending time with friends and family. Everyone had
been quite supportive, except for my daughter, Anastasia. She was still very
upset that her father and I are no longer together. It doesn’t help that
she’s sixteen and just got married herself. This divorce thing must be very
unsettling for her. I don’t think she has anything to worry about, though.
Her husband, Dumah, treats her with love and respect, which is a whole lot
better than her father treated me.
Overall, I was doing pretty well in my new single life. I was
becoming a well known Vampire model in these parts. Well, an intimate apparel
model, but a model none the less. I was also dating a wonderful, sweet man.
It was only casual at the time, but I saw great possibilities for this relationship.
Just as things were going so very well for me, as soon as I had my eyes set
on my future, I crossed paths with my past . I saw him when I came out of
The Basement after visiting with Octavia and Hugo. He was just standing there
looking as if he were waiting for something, or someone. As soon as he saw
me he started to walk over. Now I could have easily ignored him and walked
the other way, but for some reason I didn’t. We were locked in each other’s
gaze as he headed straight towards me, a small smile turning up the corners
of his mouth. Dragor stopped a few inches in front of me, towering over me
at seven feet compared to my six foot height.
“Hey, beautiful, how’s life treatin’ ya?” he greeted.
“Going fairly well, thanks for asking. How about you?”
“Pretty good, in spite of the love of my life skippin’ out on
me. What the hell was that all about anyway?”
I didn’t answer right away.
“Listen, baby, I’m not mad at ya…I just think you owe me an explanation.”
“You want to know why I divorced you?”
“Yeah.”
“Didn’t Kain explain all that to you? He said he would.”
“Yeah, he showed me the Chronoplast. Still doesn’t explain why
you had to divorce me. I mean there’s more than one way to change the future.”
“Perhaps…”
“Eliza, was it because you stopped loving me?” he asked, his voice
slightly cracking with a bit of emotion. He was trying so hard to hide it,
but I can tell what he was feeling from his voice and his eyes.
“No, Dray…I never stopped loving you.”
Dragor then took my left hand in his, rubbing his thumb over the
engagement ring he had bought me before we renewed our vows. I had almost
forgotten that I still wore that ring.
“Haven’t quite let go, huh, sweetheart?”
“I…I guess not. Dray, I wanted to explain everything to you …why
I was leaving and everything…but Kain suggested…”
“Since when do you let other people tell you how to handle your
love life? What’s going on with you Liza? You’ve really changed.”
“Dragor, if there had been any other way for me to handle that
situation, I would have done it that way. I never wanted to hurt you…”
“But you did. You broke my heart, Liza.”
I felt a lump in my throat when I heard him speak those words
with such sincere emotion. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he meant
every word. Those feelings of guilt I thought I had left behind came flooding
back again. As tears began to blur my vision, he took my face in his hands
and looked me straight in the eyes.
“Eliza, I don’t care what they told you. I’ve never raised a hand
to hurt you and I never will. Haven’t I always taken care of you?”
“Yes…” I whispered.
“Haven’t I done everything I could to give you and the kids a
good life?”
I nodded.
“Then why?”
“I…didn’t have a choice.”
He gave an exasperated sigh and began to turn from me. I grabbed
him by the shoulders, turning him back and embracing him. He returned the
embrace with a longing sigh.
“You know, I should just grab you up and take you home with me
and make love to you like never before,” he whispered. I released him from
my embrace to give him a light kiss on the lips.
“Dray I have to go. You have a nice life.” He seemed taken by
surprise by my statement. Before he could recover, I made my way into the
shadows. I walked all the way back to the safe house without ever looking
back. I had closed that chapter in the story of my life without much fanfare
or drama. I could finally move on with my life.
