Moeba looked back at her patient, who was still unconscious from her
suicide attempt. She was stable, but in this kind of business, you never
know. She felt relieved when the COM on the other end picked up.
"Hola, you have reached the center of the Bedlamian government.
How may I help you?" Moeba shook her head. Chatts had been serving administrative
duties for about two years now when the previous secretary resigned. Gods
only know how the system functioned with that happening.
"Chatterbox, you are needed at Hawk Haven." Moeba explained.
"Huh?" Chatts was confused. "Is there an emergency?"
"It concerns Sapphire."
"What happened?"
"You will be briefed when you arrive."
"Okay!" Moeba got curious when she began to hear muffled shouts
in the background.
"What is that?" she asked Chatts.
"Uh, nothing! Just a bunch of business people doing their work
and getting frustrated. I'll be right there!" The COM got cut off, but Moeba
knew that Chatterbox would be here in a flash.
Chatterbox flew as fast as his little wings could carry him to
Hawk Haven. He could only imagine just what could be so important that he
would be summoned. And it concerned Sapphire, so he was doubly worried. "They
didn't...no! They couldn't have found out about her! They just can't!" he
thought. "Dios, don't do this!"
As soon as he arrived at Hawk Haven, he couldn't help but notice
some of the 'Hawks were staring. "What?" he asked. "Am I molting?"
"No!" Bluegrass cried. "No, not at all."
"Then what's so important that I have to come all this way? Is
Sapphire okay?"
"Uh, Chatts..." Em started. "There's something we need to talk
to you about."
"Oh. What?"
"We know about Sapphire." Will finally explained.
"Will, I know she's a bad cook, but don't you think..."
"Cut the slag, Chatterbox." Quick said. "We'll talk in Stargazer's
office." Quicksilver held out his arm for Chatterbox to land on. They went
towards the Commander's office for a very important meeting.
When they got to Stargazer's office, the Commander immediately
got to the chase. "Chatterbox, your creator just tried to commit suicide."
"Exquese me?" Chatts asked. "Suicide? Sapphire?"
"There was an empty vial in her hand, once filled with keira root,
and a note. I think this counts as a suicide attempt."
"Oh, no...wh--why would she do a thing like that?"
"Because Mon*Star just about exposed her secret."
"What secret?"
"Chatts, we know Sapphire is Sara Star." Chatts just stared.
"I don't know what you're talking about. Mon*Star's obviously
lying!"
"No, he isn't." Quick said. "Seska confirmed it. She also said
you knew the entire thing. So out with it."
"No."
"What did you say?"
"I'm sorry, I should show a little etiquette. I meant, no, sir."
"Chatts, this is important! We need to know about Sapphire and
you're the only one who can tell us."
"Forget it."
"Chatterbox, I order you to tell me everything you know about
Sapphire!"
"And you, Lieutenant, can court martial me for all I care! Sara's
been through enough without me leaking out her life story! Gods know she
doesn't need you interfering in her already-ruined life!"
"Enough!" Stargazer shouted. "Chatts, please; we need this information."
"I made a promise, Commander, and I'm going to keep it, no matter
what! I'll tell you this, though; all her life, I was Sara's only friend
in the universe. No one else who knew where she came from wanted anything
to do with her...not even her own mother." Chatterbox then flew off to tend
to his creator...his friend...his hermana.
When Chatts finally made it to the infirmary, he asked Moeba for
some privacy. The Omnimorph complied, but stayed close so she could still
observe. Chatterbox carefully landed next to the gurney. "Seska?" he asked.
"Seska, can you hear me, mira?" No response. "Sara..."
I hear you, Chatterbox. Is it safe to assume I'm still alive?
"Si. I don't know the entire story, though. What happened out
there? How did Mon*Star find out about you?"
I went after him. He tore off my vizor and recognized me.
"You went after the Planet Master? What for?"
He went after Cami. He didn't hurt her, but he was sure as
hell close. Her powers are no match for his.
"They're both a Light Element, right?"
Yes, but Mon*Star also has a Mind Element. A Lightstar mixed
in with Cami's light shield and it enabled Mon*Star to control her motor
movements. At least, until I launched a shadow orb at the shield to shatter
it.
"Oh, great."
Anyways, he exposed the entire truth and now the other 'Hawks
hate me.
"They don't hate you, Sara."
I'm the illegitimate daughter of Mon*Star the Planet Master
himself and ultimately heir to the Limbo Mob! What's not to hate?
"You've worked too hard to let something as simple as a genetic
code control your life. The 'Hawks are worried, especially Sundance."
Sundance?
"She doesn't know about your relation to Mon*Star, but she was
the one who found you unconscious. She's really concerned."
She told you this?
"Si, right before she left...for her...date." A sudden
realization came to his mind. "Oh no."
Chatts, what is it?
"Uh, her date..."
Is one of those jealous types?
"Nope, just the severely overprotective type. But that's not the
point; you gotta survive this. Let me get the keira root out."
No.
"No?! Sara, if I don't get that root out now, you'll be dead in
the morning!"
I don't care! I can't face the other 'Hawks now that they know.
"Sara, please..."
Did Stargazer ask you for details?
"I never told them, chicita. You know I would never break
my promise to you."
Well now, I'm releasing you from that promise. Tell them everything.
You have my permission.
"Oh no you don't! I care too much about you to allow you to throw
away your life like this!" He tried to get close to her, but was repelled
by a shadow barrier. "Sara, no!"
You were always my best friend, Chatterbox. I know I haven't
shown that lately; I'm sorry.
"Sara, don't do this, por favor!"
I have to.
"The other 'Hawks can help! They want to help."
They can't help me. No one can help me. They don't know what
it's like to be forced to exist.
Chatterbox left the infirmary with a heavy heart. His best friend
was dying and she won't even let them try to save her, thinking that no one
knows her pain. Well, no one did, really, but they should at least try. Chatterbox
decided there was only one thing to do, the very thing that his promise to
Sapphire kept him from doing; get the 'Hawks together and tell them everything.
"Why do I have the feeling I'll regret this in the morning?" he thought as
he solemnly flew to Stargazer's office.
When Chatterbox got there, he saw Stargazer and Quicksilver inside.
Bowing his head, he glided over to the desk and landed.
"Are you ready to tell us?" Quick asked.
"Si." Chatts replied. "As soon as Tally leaves; ya think
I wanna spill my guts while he's in the room?" Stargazer shook his head and
sent Tally on patrol. As soon as he left, Chatts looked at the two superiors
and sighed.
"Okay, it all started when I was dodging this puto poacher.
I had managed to lose him in the city, but I was injured and couldn't fly
very far. Eventually, I landed near an orphanage, where I met Sara. She looked
like any normal little four-year-old, but there was something different about
her, almost mature. She said her name was Sara and that she was planning
to run away to find her mother. Well, she helped heal me, and that's when
I first learned of her power. Anyways, she figured out where her mom was
living now and invited me to come along to confront her. At first, I'm thinking
that she's some sort of meta-human prodigy, but when we finally met her mom,
it was the most drastic experience ever.
"She told Sara that she was a mistake, that she didn't belong
and wasn't even supposed to exist. That was when Mon*Star came and killed
her. When he reached for Sara, she blinded him with her shadow powers and
took off into the metaphysical realm, me following. When we snuck back to
the orphanage, a foster home was just found for her. Eventually, they learned
about her and she wiped their memories clean before taking off. This went
on for over eight years before she got adopted by the Terani house, and all
this time I watched her and cared for her. Among the Mykari, she learned
to control her powers in hopes that she could suppress them, but that wasn't
the case. When she signed up, she kept her powers secret. The only time she
used them was when I got shot saving her skin. A combo of her powers and
cybernetic implants made me the bird I am today.
"After my implants, she made me promise never to reveal her past
to anyone! When we came here, she thought she could hide them, but all the
current situations have made that impossible. Now, she's surrounded by a
shadow barrier until morning, which by that time the keira root will have
run its course and her attempt will be complete. Now, if you'll excuse me,
I have to figure out how to save mi hermana's life!"
Chatts flew off back to the infirmary, to see if Sapphire has
decided to change her mind. Sadly, the shadow barrier was still in place.
"Oh boy..." he thought. "What am I gonna do? Sara's attempting suicide, the
other 'Hawks know, and I can't do a damn thing about it! Unless..." He then
went to the nearest COM station and worked it.
Meanwhile, Cami was on her date when her COM rang. "Oh no! Now
what?" she thought as she answered. It turned out to be Chatts.
"Cami, it's me. We got a major problem!"
"What is it, Chatts?"
"It's Sa--Seska. She's got a shadow barrier over her and I can't
get through it. I gotta get that poison outta her now!"
"Did you try getting her to lower the barrier?"
"Si, but she won't comply. We're gonna need some light
energy to cancel it out."
"All right, I'll be there as soon as I can." She then turned to
her love. "Emergency. I have to go now!"
"I understand." he replied. "These things tend to happen with
very bad timing."
"I wish I could explain, but..."
"I know. I still wish you'd place your patrol routes closer to
Bedlama."
"You know I can't. We keep up this relationship, it's best that
I stay as far away from Bedlama as possible while on-duty."
"All right..." Cami teleported by then, hoping to help Sapphire.
When she got to the infirmary, Sundance gapped at the shadow barrier
around Sapphire. "I never thought she'd use so much power." she told Chatts.
"I know! Can ya knock it out?"
"Maybe. I can try, but I might end up hurting her."
"Do what you have to do!" Sundance did just that. It took most
of her power to neutralize the barrier. Chatts immediately went in and drained
the poison out of her. Sapphire, being too weak to stop him, could only lay
there as her life was being saved.
On Brim Star, Mon*Star sat on his throne for what seemed like
hours. The recent battle with the SilverHawks have given him much to think
about.
All this time, she was alive. My daughter. My heir. And she's
fighting against me!! How dare she! My own flesh and blood! She should be
by my side, ready to take over the Mob. Gods, she'd make a great Mob boss.
My power, her looks, a perfect combination. Perfect...except she's the law!
Why is she so desperate to hide her true purpose? Why is she trying to deny
who she is? I can convince her to join me. But how?
Meanwhile, in a secret compartment in his quarters that no one
(not even Mon*Star) knew about, a lone figure inspects a special Sky Shadow
and its compartments. He sees the battle with the SilverHawks and Mon*Star,
and knows what is currently bothering the Planet Master.
"She's here!" he thinks. "Mon*Star's heir is in Limbo, and she's
a SilverHawk?! Oh bother! I thought there was something about her, and now
I know. It looks like she loathes 'daddy dearest'. If I were his kin, I'd
do the same. Nothing new there. Ah, well, at least I know she doesn't want
anything to do with him? But I wonder..."
And he wondered and wondered, until he recorded a simple message,
and sent it along to a friend, with strict instructions to forward it to
Corporal Sapphire of the SilverHawks, reluctant heir to the Limbo Mob.
