Chapter 1
Darkness Takes Flight
This is the story of a young SilverHawk's trials and tragedies throughout his career in Limbo and how it all started on Earth.
One day at the SilverHawks Training Academy on Earth, an 18-year old with black spiked hair named Kumo Kagetaka was proving to be quite a nuisance. He was a maverick; meaning he didn't take orders, he gave them! Another SilverHawk was already on his way to Limbo. This did not please Kagetaka because all the good things happen in Limbo and he wanted to see them first hand. Before preparations, Kagetaka knocked out the chosen Hawk to be launched into Limbo and took his place. The commander was too late to stop the launch and Kagetaka was on his merry way to Hawk Haven, but not before the commander on Earth sent a message to Commander Stargazer.
Inside Hawk Haven, Aurora was doing routine checkup around the console when she heard the incoming transmission from Earth.
"This is Lt. Aurora Stargazer at Hawk Haven," she responded. "State your report."
"This is the SilverHawks Training Academy on Earth calling! Emergency!" the faculty warned. "A renegade SilverHawk is on his way towards Limbo! Be on guard! He's heading your way!" The transmission stopped just as the other SilverHawks rushed in, including the Commander himself.
"What's the game plan, Aurora?" asked SteelWill. "What's the call from Earth?"
Aurora told everyone about the maverick SilverHawk Kumo Kagetaka and how he was heading for Limbo against orders from Earth.
"Great," groaned SteelHeart. "It's not bad enough I got a maverick on my case, I get another one that's even crazier!"
Skyedansuer just looked at SteelHeart and said, "Well, excuse me for breathing. You're not all that yourself." Then, Quicksilver came in to stop the catfight that had almost ensued.
"OK, ladies, break it up!" he commanded. "We’ve got bigger things to worry about, like this renegade SilverHawk!"
"Quicksilver is right," added the Commander. "Whoever
he is, we must find out why!" He then ordered Bluegrass to take the Steel
Twins, Skyedansuer and the Copper Kidd to intercept the shuttle and bring
in Kagetaka. All SteelHeart and Skyedansuer could do was give a cold stare
to each other, but also not to alarm the other SilverHawks of their long-standing
feud.
As soon as the SilverHawks left to stop the shuttle, a gold watch was moving all by itself. Because that wasn't any watch. Immediately, it changed into a being made of yellow atoms. It was Mo-Lec-U-Lar, Mon*Star's devious doppelganger capable of assuming ANY form!
"Mo-Lec-U-Lar calling Mon*Star," crackled the monotone mimic. "It seems the SilverHawks have unexpected company."
Back on Brim*Star, the entire Mob is on hand to listen to Mo-Lec-U-Lar's report. Mon*Star seems fascinated that a renegade SilverHawk is making his way towards Limbo.
"Is that so?" grinned the galactic tyrant. "An outlaw SilverHawk? It's time we put our plan into action!" He then signaled Mo-Lec-U-Lar to await further instructions and to keep hidden. Afterwards, he turned to the Mob for primary instructions.
"This is the rarest chance we ever had in years," spoke Mon*Star. "that a SilverHawk not fighting for law and order would come to Limbo. It's time we turn him to our side. With a SilverHawk on our side, we'll be more powerful than ever before!"
All the Mob cheered for Mon*Star for this brilliant but rare plan to bring Kagetaka over to the Mob. Then, Mon*Star gave out separate instructions.
"Hardware," he started. "Stay here and work on a special device I've planned for ages." Hardware nodded and knew what Mon*Star meant.
"Buzzsaw and Windhammer," continued Mon*Star. "Take the Wicked Zoomer towards the shuttle. Melodia and Zero will accompany you in the Limbo Limo." Both the robotic slasher and the Storm Master went towards the Wicked Zoomer as Hardware was saying to them, "Careful! I had it detailed!"
Yesman was anxious for his task. "And what about me, boss?" he hissed nervously.
"Make perfect preparations for our GUEST OF HONOR," chuckled Mon*Star. "then prepare the transformation chamber!"
After Yesman prepared for the arrival of Kumo Kagetaka,
he began to operate Brim*Star's orbit gathering the rays from the Moon*Star.
Once again, the effects of the lunar rays transformed Mon*Star from organic
mutant to armored demon. After the transformation, Mon*Star aboard Skyrunner
lead the Wicked Zoomer and the Limbo Limo out of Brim*Star and towards the
shuttle.
Inside the shuttle, Kumo Kagetaka was awaiting the day he sets foot into Limbo. Alongside him is a raven named Erebus, named after an embodiment of darkness. The strange part is that Erebus can talk.
"In a few minutes, Erebus," smiled the eager Kagetaka. "we'll be in Limbo battling evil, saving planets, and making a fortune! You're gonna love it here."
Then, Erebus looked on the radar scope to see the Maraj coming at breakneck speed.
"Kumo," he said with a sigh. "you're not gonna like this. The Welcome Wagon's here, but to welcome you into the Penal Planet."
"THE SILVERHAWKS?!" bellowed Kumo. "Arresting ME?! I wanted to BECOME them, but if it's a fight they want, so be it!" He told Erebus to prepare for battle, for he's accompanying the maverick on his first battle in Limbo.
"Oh boy," moaned Erebus. "I had to open my big beak!"
The Maraj was closing in on the shuttle carrying Kagetaka and Erebus and the SilverHawks were ready to stop the renegade from venturing into Limbo.
"SilverHawks, prepare to--" ordered Bluegrass, but was interrupted by a wave of evil sound. It was Melodia aboard the Limbo Limo with Zero at the wheel.
"Music review's in, cowboy," shrieked the sonic vixen. "and you're gonna hit rock bottom!" Melodia wildly fired more evil notes from her Sound Smasher, and hit one of the shuttles engines in the process. While the SilverHawks and the Mob battle each other out, Kagetaka and Erebus are spinning out of control all over Limbo!
"Help! Mayday!" squawked Erebus. "Jane, stop this crazy thing!"
"Button your beak, birdbrain," snarled Kagetaka. "and figure out how we're getting out of this predicament ALIVE!"
"Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, Kumo!" snapped
Erebus back as the shuttle was now passing Hawk Haven.
Chapter 2
THE ULTIMATE WEAPON
Kumo Kagetaka's shuttle carrying him and the talking raven Erebus was flying over Hawk Haven and about to enter Bedlama's atmosphere. The Maraj was still trying to outmaneuver the Mob's vehicles to capture the shuttle. The Maraj released the Steel Twins, the Copper Kid and Skyedansuer to intercept the Limbo Limo before it reached the shuttle.
"There's the shuttle!" pointed out SteelWill. "We've beaten the Mob to the clock!"
But before the SilverHawks could open the shuttle to apprehend Kagetaka, lightning bolts came right near the Twins.
"Didn't expect interference from the sidelines,
eh SteelWill?" boomed Windhammer as he fired another barrage of lightning
at the SilverHawks.
Inside, Kagetaka and Erebus were caught in the confusion and chaos outside of their shuttle.
"What a way to go!" groaned the raven. "We're dead if the Hawks nab us, we're dead if the Mob gets us. Either way, kiss Limbo good-bye."
"We have to hold on, Erebus," said Kagetaka. "We don't know what'll happen yet."
Then, Erebus saw a gold circular saw cutting through the shuttle. It was Buzzsaw cutting a hole for Melodia and Zero while he and Windhammer take care of the SilverHawks.
"Brace yourself, chief!" warned Erebus. "We've got party crashers!"
Kagetaka took out his phaser and aimed it at the hole. "When they come through this hole--BANG! They'll be disintegrated!" he cackled holding the phaser. But the Mob was clever after repeated mistakes. Instead of going to the hole, Zero threw his magnetic rod like a javelin through the window. The rod struck the rogue SilverHawk in the back knocking him out cold. Erebus zoomed out of the broken window but Melodia was too fast for him and used her Sound Smasher's high-frequency sounds to scramble the raven's senses.
Kagetaka was carried over Zero's shoulders and the Memory Thief gave the signal to withdraw. "Fall back!" ordered Buzzsaw. The Mob then retreated back to Brim*Star with both Kagetaka and Erebus in the Limbo Limo. This left the SilverHawks in a terrible predicament.
"Well," said Skyedansuer to SteelHeart. "what's the plan, fearless leader?"
"We go back to Hawk Haven," she replied a bit angrily. "and figure out how to stop the Mob."
"One thing puzzles me, Sis," noted SteelWill. "Why would the Mob want Kagetaka? He's not one of us."
"I know. That's what bothers me," said SteelHeart. "I know Krysten is a loose cannon. That I can tolerate, but a rogue SilverHawk is over the line of my toleration."
With minor damages, the SilverHawks headed back
to Hawk Havento figure a plan of attack to stop the Mob.
Meanwhile, back on Brim*Star, Zero brought back the memories to Kagetaka just as he and Erebus were coming around.
"Anyone get the number of that train that hit us?" blurted the dizzy raven. Before Kagetaka could speak, he was surrounded by the entire Mob, all looking at their latest catch. "Erebus," he said, "I think they have our number--number 1 with a bullet."
Hardware then came in with a gas-gun and shot nerve gas at the renegade SilverHawk and his raven companion. "Phase 1 completed, boss!" smiled the slimy reptilian. "Kumo Kagetaka and Erebus are ready!"
"Then, begin Phase 2!" ordered Mon*Star. "This is the first time an actual SilverHawk is on OUR side for a change!"
Hardware remembered the plans he used for Darkbird and began to make a darker version of Quicksilver and Tally Hawk. Deep in the underground laboratory he began to build SilverHawk armor for both the renegade and his raven. When the process was completed, Kagetaka became like a SilverHawk: partly-metal, partly-real. Erebus was also made that way, too. Then, Mon*Star came into Hardware's lab to check on his latest idea.
"What do ya think, boss?" he grunted. "Just like a SilverHawk."
Mon*Star looked him over and told Hardware, "He's impressive, but it's not enough!"
"Not enough?" Hardware replied. "What did you have in mind?" Mon*Star then told Hardware to make sure that Kagetaka had all of the powers that the Mob use to make him the Ultimate Weapon against the SilverHawks.
Hardware was too reluctant to say no, because whatever Mon*Star wanted, he got. No questions asked! So, Hardware had Kagetaka hooked up to an energy receiver so that the Mob could bestow their powers into his being and Erebus was forced to watch.
"He's gonna feel THAT in the morning," he crowed quietly.
After all the powers have been gathered, Kagetaka emerged with all the powers of the Mob except for the Light*Star which Mon*Star alone controlled. Kagetaka had the wings, the mask, lasers, jets and now all the Mob's powers.
"SilverHawk," spoken Mon*Star. "You've been given great powers that the academy has never dreamed of bestowing upon you. You surpass all other SilverHawks combined including their beloved Commander Stargazer!"
Kagetaka was liking this more every minute. Surpassing the great Commander Stargazer was his ideal in life ever since he began the Academy.
"Now," continued Mon*Star, "care to join our side, Kumo Kagetaka?"
"You want me?" smiled Kagetaka. "I'm in. Erebus, too. Just two favors, Planet Master."
"Name them and they'll be granted," the Mob Boss said.
"Make me a cross of the Sprinthawk and Maraj," the rogue demanded. "And no one ever can call me Kagetaka or Kumo or anything!" He then put on his mask, spread out black metallic wings and declared; "From now on, all of Limbo will refer to me as SHADOWHAWK!!"
SHADOW IN THE SKY
Outside of Mon*Star's fortress, Kumo Kagetaka, now known as
Shadowhawk, walked towards Hardware. The mechanic was working on a
plane that looked like the Sprinthawk, except it was coated with specially
treated black armor to make it invisible to radar. It was also capable of
disappearing like the Maraj with the pilot and cargo inside it.
"There you go, Shadowhawk," grunted the reptilian. "Your
plane is all set. All it needs now is a good name."
Shadowhawk looked it over and decided to test it out. He
and Erebus hopped in the cockpit of his new plane and took off into Limbo.
Hardware then sent drones to attack the new plane to make sure it was his
best weapon against the SilverHawks.
"We got company, Shadowhawk," squawked Erebus. "Drone squadron
on our six!"
"I see them, Erebus," smiled Shadowhawk. "but they won't
see me!" With that, he activated the invisibility cloak of his plane and
disappeared from view. The drones sailed right past it withouth registering
anything. When the plane reappeared, Shadowhawk then set his sights on the
drones.
"Now to test the particle beam gun," he said as he pushed
a red button. "Now you DIE!"
A large bolt of nuclear energy vaporized the drones into
metallic dust. After completing its test run, Shadowhawk turned the plane
back to Hardware without a scratch.
"I think I decided on a name for this, Hardware," Shadowhawk
informed him. "I'll call it Nightmare. Sounds fitting, doesn't it?"
"Yes, indeed!" agreed Hardware.
Then, Mon*Star walked out to the hangar and headed in Shadowhawk's
direction.
"Well, Shadowhawk," said Mon*Star. "Ready for your first assignment?"
"Ready and able, Planet Master!" he replied while saluting
him.
"Good," Mon*Star replied, then handed Shadowhawk his first
job for the Mob. "You are to collect payment from Soundori!"
"Soundori?" questioned Shadowhawk. "The legendary Siren
of Limbo?"
Mon*Star explained. "She’s done work for us in the
past and hasn't handed over the merchandise! If she doesn't pay, FORCE HER!"
"OK," he nodded to Mon*Star. "I'll carry it out!"
Shadowhawk headed for the Nightmare with Erebus flying alongside
him, while in the
meantime Mon*Star seemed a bit concered about Shadowhawk.
"I've got a feeling that Shadowhawk will botch this up,
Hardware," Mon*Star said. "Activate Skyshadow and have him follow the Nightmare!"
"OK, boss." Hardware said and went to retrieve Skyshadow.
Elsewhere, at Hawk Haven, repairs on the SilverHawks were
finally complete after their last conflict with the
Mob. Skyedanseur and SteelHeart were still having their small feud while
the rest of the SilverHawks were figuring out the Mob's latest plan.
"Something about the latest turns of events has got me puzzled," said
Commander Stargazer. "The Mob gets word of a SilverHawk who does not follow
the rules back on Earth, and now he's captured by those crooks!"
Quicksilver was puzzled the same way. "Maybe Mon*Star is
trying to get all the information he can about us," he said.
"Like someone looking at our playbook," added SteelWill.
"That new SilverHawk might play for the other side!"
"If that's the case," SteelHeart asserted, "then we got
to stop him now!"
Aurora wasn't ready to dispatch the team yet. "Hold it right
there, SilverHawks!" she ordered. "We don't know that for sure. We have to
make certain that Kagetaka has indeed gone to the Mob." Aurora sent
Skylord to investigate the facts while the SilverHawks waited, much to the
chagrin of Skyedanseur.
On Soundori's world, the young siren was relaxing away in
her chambers. She was just ready to go to another planet to wreak havoc when
the Nightmare began to dock close by.
"Haven't seen that vehicle before," observed the sound siren.
"Nor have I seen that pilot. He looks like a SilverHawk."
Shadowhawk and Erebus were looking over the terrain. "This
is Soundori's World, all right," said the raven. "But where's the siren?"
"She'll turn up, Erebus," Shadowhawk replied, activating
his infared scanner. "If she tries to escape, we'll nab her!"
At the same time, Soundori was investigating her palace
for any signs of SilverHawk activity. When she went back to her palace
and in her bedroom chamber, she found Erebus perched over one of the four
posts and lying on the bed in his Earth clothes was Shadowhawk himself.
"I knew you'd come back here eventually, Siren of the Sound," smirked
the rogue SilverHawk. "Mon*Star told me you did a job for him and he wants
to collect his share. And he's mean when it comes to late payments."
"I don't know who you are, SilverHawk," demanded Soundori,
"but you'll be sorry you messed with me!"
With that she started creating powerful soundwaves all over her chamber,
but Shadowhawk stood firm. He slammed his fist down and shot a fog
bank at Soundori, a specialty of Windhammer's. Then, Shadowhawk began to
play air-guitar and Soundori was confused.
"Rock on, Shadowhawk!" squaked Erebus. "Jam on her with
your bad self!"
"Thanks, Erebus!" he smiled. "This next song goes out to
Soundori!" That air-guitar gesture was in fact a Sound Smasher blast which
Melodia uses. Soundori was too slow to react and fell victim to it. Shadowhawk
then walked over the Sound Siren and said, "That song was called 'Pay Now
or Pay Later (With Your Life)'."
Soundori had to give her most valued jewels and part of
her planet to Mon*Star. Shadowhawk then smiled and said, "A pleasure doing
business with you."
He sailed away with Erebus in the Nightmare leaving part
of Soundori's palace damaged with a message for her. Soundori lookd at the
damage, then read the note Shadowhawk left. It read:
"The damage to your palace was for skipping out on my payment,
Sound Siren! Next time you fail to pay me, the damage will be to your head!
Respectfully yours, Mon*Star, the Planet Master!"
With that a different sound came from Soundori's world,
loud enough that Condor of the Blue Team radioed in.
"Commander, this is Condor," he reported. "I can hear Soundori
over her planet. The sounds coming from her are off the decible scale, and
there's some rage and woe in her voice."
"Soundori?" replied Stargazer. "That doesn't sound like
her. Anything else to report?"
"I also saw the SprintHawk leave or what looked like it,"
added Condor. "but this SprintHawk is painted black."
"Black?" yelled Stargazer. "That's the rogue SilverHawk!"
This was the break Stargazer was looking for to retrieve Kagetaka.
"Attention, SilverHawks!" shouted Stargazer. "We found Kumo
Kagetaka! He was last seen on Soundori's planet heading northwest! Follow
Condor's coordinates and intercept and arrest Kagetaka!"
"Right, Commander!" reported Quicksilver. Without delay,
the Gold Team left for the SprintHawk, the Maraj and the Speed Cycle with
the remaining Blue Team following behind.
Elsewhere, Shadowhawk sent the items Soundori "thankfully
handed over" to Mon*Star back on Brim*Star and decided to have some downtime
at the Starship Casino. But before he could get there, someone shot
at the Nightmare.
"Just great!" squawked Erebus. "We got Hawks on our tail!"
Shadowhawk looked at the radar and saw the three vehicles on screen.
"Not anymore, old friend!" smiled Shadowhawk. "Hardware
didn't make this jet for nothing, you know!" He hit the switch to activate
the Nightmare's cloaking device and in an instant, the plane along with Shadowhawk
and Erebus vanished without a trace.
"Well, tarnation!" exclaimed Bluegrass. "That thing can
use the Maraj's cloaking device!"
"Talk about your surpise plays!" added SteelWill. "This
Kagetaka is one tough defense line for Mon*Star!"
Then, Aurora came online to the SilverHawks' frequency.
"I knew something like this would happen," she said. "We have confirmed from
Soundori that the person we're looking for has been given the name SHADOWHAWK."
"Shadowhawk?" groaned SteelHeart. "That figures."
"And that's not all, Hawks," continued Aurora. "Kagetaka,
I mean Shadowhawk has not only been given a suit like ours, but all the powers
of the Mob's weapons except the Lightstar."
"That's unheard of," replied Skyedanseur. "Even Mon*Star
couldn't possibly do that!"
"For once, Krysten, you might be right," commented SteelHeart.
"For your sake and ours, I hope so."
"Then get your wings in gear, SilverHawks," ordered Commander Stargazer.
"And stop Shadowhawk at all costs!"
"We're on it, Commander!" replied Bluegrass and all three
of the Gold Team's spacecraft went to find Shadowhawk wherever he was hiding.
At the Starship Casino, Poker-Face was in the backroom collecting
the usual profits from the gamblers when he heard that a SilverHawk entered
the casino.
"A SilverHawk?!" said a startled Poker-Face. "They have no right here!"
Poker-Face deliberately kept the Casino beyond the Light-Year Limit because
the SilverHawks didn’t have jurisdiction in that territory. "Quick, Mumbo,"
Poker-Face said to Mumbo Jumbo. "Take care of it!"
When Mumbo Jumbo went to the front, he did see a SilverHawk…their
own! Mumbo instantly smiled. "Kumo welcome." he said to Shadowhawk.
"Thanks, Mumbo," he said. "Where's Poker-Face? I'd like
to get a few games in before my next mission."
Mumbo waved to Poker-Face to come out and told him that
was Shadowhawk who entered.
"Shadowhawk," smiled the nervous android casino owner. "Welcome
to my casino. Help yourself."
Shadowhawk sat down next to one of the slot machines and
noticed a slithering man with a magnetic cane next to him. He recognized
Zero the Memory Thief, and decided to make him jump.
"Cipher Mnemonus?" he said in an alarming voice.
"WHAT?!" shouted Zero nervously, knowing only that a SilverHawk
was beside him.
Zero heard Shadowhawk giggled like a madman. "You fell
for it, Zero!" cackled the rogue SilverHawk.
Zero bent to retrieve his spilled change and put it back
in his container. "Shadowhawk, you maniac!" he growled. "I thought you were
one of the other SilverHawks!"
The Wicked Zoomer carrying Hardware and Windhammer landed
on the casino and found Shadowhawk working at the slots.
"It's time, Shadowhawk," said Hardware. "You and the birdbrain
have a mission on the Planet of the Mimes."
"I'll guide you along the way," added Windhammer. "Follow us in the
Nightmare."
"ALL RIGHT!" shouted and smiled Shadowhawk. "Another mission!"
He grabbed Erebus by the wings and left out of the casino post-haste. "Come
on, Erebus! We're flying!"
"But, waaaaaait!" Erebus shouted as Shadowhawk dragged him
out. "What about the slot machiiiine?"
"Cipher can take care of that for me!" smiled Shadowhawk.
"He earned his keep. Now let's motor!"
When the Wicked Zoomer and the Nightmare took off for the
Planet of the Mimes, Zero was still on the ground wondering about Shadowhawk
and his odd behavior. "That Shadowhawk!" he grumbled. "He's been in Limbo
for 2 days now and already he knows everything! Plus, he's starting to be
an annoyance!"
He then hopped into Melodia's Limbo Limo and began heading
back to Brim*Star with heavy thoughts in his head.
More strange missions lay ahead for the SilverHawks as well
as the Mob with Shadowhawk in tow. And things were bound to get more interesting
in Limbo for weeks to come.
