Take Two
Interlude
Kagome’s diary
February, 1997
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I had hoped, in my vanity, I suppose, that if I knew enough, planned
enough, I could turn the tide of the terrible things that were to
come. I wrote it all down, every fight, every confrontation,
everything I could remember about this year; a laundry list of events,
sorted into ‘Allow’ and ‘Prevent.’
What a waste of time.
Thus far, to the best of my knowledge, I have prevented exactly one
thing. I am still in possession of the Shikon no Tama, whole and
unscathed.
Everything else, events that were fueled by the Shikon no kakera, are
now the result of caprice, whims, fate, arrogance. Shippou’s father
still fell to the Thunder Brothers. It was probably a lot harder
for them, but they pulled it off. The curse of the Kazaana was on
Miroku already, so nothing has changed in his favor. The fumes
from Sesshoumaru’s poison made it impossible for Inuyasha to smell the
Winds in the tomb of their father, so while he was able to drive
Sesshoumaru off, once again short one arm, the battle didn’t end
decisively. Just as well, I suppose. If things keep on as
they are, we’re going to need His High and Mightyness eventually.
We couldn’t prevent Kikyou’s resurrection, either. Urasue’s
herbal marinade was more than strong enough to accomplish its task,
even without Inuyasha calling out for the woman who killed him.
I feel so useless sometimes. I know where this path we’re following
leads, and I’m willing to do what’s necessary if we get to the same end
again, but I want so much for things to be different this time. I
want to save Inuyasha, instead of watching him die. I want him to
kiss me again, and not have to say, ‘stop.’
There’s a slight problem with all of this, though. Things are
starting to slip out of control. Inuyasha is forgetting our
past. And Houjou is forgetting our future.
